In the case of WP, the damping units in there kit stuff is different in design than many of the production forks they've sold.

By blind, I mean none of the riders involved knew which fork had which parts in it, I was the only one in the test that was even aware what we were testing (I wasn't made aware of which fork was which though).
But back in the day, I got to ride a factory bike a couple different times at Pala. The bikes were set up for a racer weighing 150-165. I was probably 225+ (6'-6"). At the time you had to case the step up to make the inside rut, forks bottomed out. No problem.
Also at least back when I was competitive late 90s early 2000s it was recommended to use as much of the suspension that you could, so in theory you should bottom out once per lap at the harshest point on the track.
