So Recently I bought a 2011 rmz 250. When I first got it, the bike was hard to start. Took about 10-15 kicks before it would fire and after it started it ran decent. Took it apart and the valve clearances were quite a bit off. Adjusted the valves to middle of spec and timed everything. Seems dead on to me. Counted 13 pins in between dots and lined up dots horizontally on the head. Put it all back together and it won't start at all. Bike has good spark clean filter and fresh gas. Tried started fluid in the intake and still can't get it to run. The bike will fire and sputter but won't start and run. I'm not sure on the condition of the top end but Is it possible that could be the problem? I can't think of any other factors If I have air spark and spray starter fluid on why the bike wouldn't run. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like maybe the cam chain is worn out and thus the cam timing is off enough to not allow it to start. There are other possible issues as well as the valves needed reshimming. I would also suspect that it needs a topend and a valve job.

Okay I had the head off and the top end looked pretty new. The PO said it had a newer top end so I pulled it apart to take a look. Valve seats were pretty good and valves seated fine. threw brand new gaskets in it and put it all back together. Gonna order a cam chain tonight and throw it on this week. Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it goes

Make sure you update the shift detent spring while you're getting the bike ready, unless it was done before.

Thanks. Previous owner told me the 450 part was installed.

If it were to be anything electrical like one of the sensors would I still be getting spark?

Are you sure the piston is at TDC when you set the cam timing?

Yes I put something down the plug hole to confirm it's at tdc

I switched the cam timing over to the compression tdc (had it on ignition) and I reset my idle knob to 5-6 turns as per reccomomendation in the manual. after about 20-25 kicks the bike fired up with the choke on and I let it idle. As soon as I shut the choke off however the bike shut off. I turned the idle up slightly which seemed to help as it ran with the choke off but it idled slightly high and the bike took quite a few kicks to start. It runs perfectly when it will start but it is extremely difficult to get it to start. Take like 30 kicks to get it to even sputter like its trying to start and after about 4 kicks of sputtering it will finally start up and run. Once I shit it off i have the same problem hot or cold.

Had a 2011 RMZ 250 that was really hard to start from cold but was ok when warm. Finally traced to a bad connection on the water temp sensor on the cylinder. Used the suzuki diagnostic wire and battery to trace the fault. Hope this helps

Nothing in life is more comical and amusing than what you find done to used bikes by POs. I trust nothing they says was done, and if it was done, I would not trust it was done right.

First thing I would do to any used MX is pull the cylinder and look at the top end. Hard starting is a symptom of poor compression. It could simply need a new top end. Start with that and go from there. If they were too lazy to adjust valves, I doubt they found any energy or money in the couch cushions to do top ends.

Bike needs Air, fuel, spark and compression. If its not starting, one of those is missing.

Yea I cant disagree with you there. I've seen some pretty hacked up and unmaintained used bikes in the past. I'm gonna throw a new top end in and hopefully that solves the issue. Thanks
