I am strongly considering moving to Orange County from suburban North-East Ohio for family, fun, and company transfer.

My parents live in OC. But i was born in the Midwest and i have lived in Indiana, KY, and currently reside in Ohio.

Every time i visit, frequently; i find it difficult to head back to the same-ol same-ol drab and dreary Ohio.

I would like to see if any current or former California residents have any advice, insight, or information as to why or why not they would choose to move to CA if they had to do it over again. Or, why they might currently might want to leave?

Help a vitard out!!!

I moved out to San Diego 5 years ago from Boston. In short, I love it. Like anything, there are ups and downs, downs being cost for stuff in general/housing and ups being being able to ride sick areas/tracks for mx and mtb whenever I want all year long. I'm not a super fan of OC and I feel like it is less of a clusterfuck down here in SD but you mentioned you've visited and love it so just go with your gut.

Thanks for the info Seth. And SD is awesome too; an hour from my parents door step as they live south of irvine just east of the laguna's.

Keep em coming! Help!

In short

Negative-
high cost of living (really high)
Traffic (at almost all times)
No moto within 45 min

Positive-
Great weather
Great food
Beautiful coastline
Majority of people are actually pleasant
Diversity in almost everything

That nailed it. Where Rutcity is talking about is very close to where I live. My girlfriend dreams of retiring somewhere with, "More trees and less people."

More trees and less people is where I live......in Ohio. Dizzy

Rut where are you living now. What part of NE Ohio?
7/17/2016 6:59am
So when you say company transfer, does that mean you already have a job lined up?
If so, where is said job because that's going to determine where you want to land.
If you can choose any place to land I would recommend the Carlsbad area. It's North
San Diego County. It's spendy but worth it. As you get close to the coast you tend to
interact with a better class of people. also as you get close to the coast you get a
more temperment weather, not as hot in the summer and not as cold in the winter. This
could save you hundreds of dollars in AC cost in the summer.
Carlsbad, a place where there are more things to do than you could imagine.
All within an hours drive (if no traffic)
Scuba dive, surf, paddle board, road bike along the coast. beach cruiser casual around
the old beach community. Hang out at the beach, excellent food choices. Head inland to mountain
bike, hike, rock climb. Break out the motorcycle, within 1 1/2 hours drive, ride a different track every
week for couple of months and not the same place twice. Ride the desert, ride the mountains, some
go south of the border for even more diversity. Take flying lessons at Palomar, airplane or helicopter.
Great museums at Balboa Park to relax.
Did I mention the Women are like a gift from the gods in this part of the country. Anyone who has
the slightest appreciation of a beautiful woman cannot walk around without being impressed on a regular basis.
Along the coast more people tend to be in better physical condition and they just look so beautiful!
You could take up hang gliding, jetskiing, or just nothing.
If you're into beer, San Diego county has become the epicenter for the microbrewery industry.
If you're into fishing, excellent choices there also.
All this comes at a cost. You might find that the price to live here requires you to work so much that there is no
time for any of the above Sad

Live close to work! Do NOT commute----you will regret it. If you can work from anywhere, then my choice would be Carlsbad or Escondido. If a classic beach vibe is your goal, then my hometown of Huntington Beach is hard to beat....if you're cool---if not, beat it! Tongue Tongue Laughing

Any comparison depends on your reference point and family situation.

I moved to SD 5 years ago from upstate NY (10 min from Broome Tioga). Same time as Seth.

My only regret is that we didn't do this 10-15 years ago. I completely appreciate your comment about "drab and dreary". That describes where we lived perfectly. It described the neglect of infrastructure, career opportunities, weather, and general attitude of the people.

Costs are higher out here, but housing is really the only significant one for us. Car insurance, groceries, gas, utilities are almost the same, maybe 5% more than we were paying. And real estate taxes are so much less here than NY so the disparity in monthly housing cost isn't as big as one might think. Not sure about Ohio.

We moved with an almost 2 year old, now 6 and I couldn't be more excited about the opportunities that she has here (and experiences she's already had). There's so much for families, just depends on what you want to do. I got her started riding this past year and we spent many weekends in the desert having adventures and making memories, majorly looking forward to next season, but in the meantime we have so much other (productive) stuff to do.

I'm in a better situation by orders of magnitude than I was 6 years ago.

I would do it all over without a moment's hesitation.

Again, all depends on your point of reference and what your goals are.

Right on GuyB. It feels away from the hustle and bustle but if i need to go anywhere having 241 to jump on isn't bad at all.

Thanks mxer146.

I'm definitely with all of the positives.

The most negative right now is the housing issue.
126% higher than where im at now according to http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/cost-of-living/ Woohoo Grinning Silly Pinch

The traffic is something else too; but 45 minutes to moto isnt bad at all to me. Glen Helen pretty much right at 50 minutes

ToolMaker thanks for the advice and time spent on the reply as well.

Job is a standing offer within the same corporation i have worked for since college; for when the timing is right. There are a few locations actually. The more likely location for work would be tustin or pomona.

The whole thought of having so much to do within a relative short drive is whats so awesome to me. Im a skiier/boarder and the whole 5 hour drive to mammoth was nothing to me. The beach is maybe 20 minutes from where the rents live. I grew up driving 6 hours to see all of our closest family members. Along with racing on the weekends growing up has made me really not worried about driving a few hours. The micro climates are amazing to me. The inversion layer does seem to cool off everything west of the saddleback mountains and than you just drive to the ie to check out TLD, PC, calspeed @ Fontana, glen helen, etc, so on so forth; then you really start getting towards that desert heat haha!! I have a picture on my cell from last years MXGP at Glen Helen and it reads 116 degrees! Thats a personal reality check to me sometimes! The thing about CA is that you dont really have the humidity like i have back here!! I'd rather have the dry heat!!!

True statement that the cost of living may force you to not enjoy some perks of the state is a very legit point depending on your level of disposable income. Being 29 i'm not completely where i want to be but i do make ends meet. I'm not a Dr. or Attorney; i would need a pretty nice COLA to make it equivalent to my current standard of living here in OH

HB is sweet, and it would be doable for the drive. I love the vibe of dana point and especially san clemente too. But that wont be doable with what i earn and the commute to tustin or pomona.

I was a legit skateboarder and grew up behind a boat wakeboarding, i know i can do it- but i still need to take some surf lessons so i can feel like i belong in a legendary surf city!!

Sounds like you have your stuff together. I'm currently very frustratingly singleBlink but thats another story; right now would be the time to pick up and start over being 29 if i were to do it.

My other extended family is all over indianapolis, IN. Thank God i have both sets of my grandparents in their 80's still around; but you can only see them so often you know. I don't have any siblings as my bro passed; and getting close to my parents and more so friends now would mean the world to me.

I spent many hours on the bus when I was a kid on the "Beach Blvd" route to go surfing.
Grew up in Garden Grove. Later when I had friends that could drive we spent a lot of
hours in the water just north of the pier at the cliffs.
When I was a kid, Beach Blvd would dead end at PCH, there was a little parking lot with
a small building for a concession stand that sold simple food and rented those blue rafts.
I think maybe it's changed since then. My goal in life was to have a car so I could drive
to the beach and go surfing. Oh how times have changed.

Definitely DO NOT choose to work in Pomona! the commute will kill you in that area and its always hot and smoggy/hazy out there.

I grew up in Lake Forest/Mission Viejo from the late 70's to 5 years ago. I left because it got to be too much for me and my family. It's a great place to live, with a million things to do, which, is good and bad. I was down there over the 4th and noticed that they are really packing in the houses lately. They're closing Irvine Meadows, and still working on the Great Park.

MXER146 and GuyB will disagree with me but, I think a lot of the people down there are entitled and that started to wear on me. That's just my personal experience though, and that's not trying to dig on those guys.

Also, just noticed you're a skater...Etnies has a sweet skate park in Lake Forest. Lake Forest doesn't exactly give off the young and single vibe though.

Born in raised in Orange County. Moto is 45+ minutes, but when you're home, you're home. Love the freedom of the countryside, but I never want to leave what this place has to offer.

I doubt I could afford to live out in California. I'm from Cleveland too. But I live an hour outside of Cleveland. I hate the city. I only drive there to work and that's it.

Move. Lol. It'll work out for you. Just go.

Your last sentence makes it a no brainer.... Family is everything, do yourself a favor and make the move. Nothing would keep you from going back, if it didn't work out in California. There is lots of opportunities here and the weather doesn't get any better. Being born and raised in California, I get a little jealous of what kind of home I could have in another state and I get really tired of the rat race here, but the trade offs aren't worth me leaving. My whole family is here, my mom, my dad and his wife, my son, my sister and husband all live within 5 minutes of me. My daughter moved to San Diego 2 years ago to finish college and says she's never moving. She graduates at the end of the year and landed a great job down there which has been a blessing (for my wallet) lol If I could live in San Diego or Hunignton Beach, I would do it in a heartbeat. I work in the Motion Picture Industry and have to be within an hour of the Major Studios, (with traffic) or it wouldn't be worth it to me. There are areas of OC that I'd also love to live, but it's just not practical for me. The beach weather is one of the most appealing things to me at this stage of my life, I'm hoping to move somewhere near the coast when I retire.

I think maybe it's changed since then. My goal in life was to have a car so I could drive
to the beach and go surfing. Oh how times have changed.
Naugle''s just re-opened (after 25+ years) Southside @ Hilton, on the beach. You know you need some of that.... Cool Same recipes, different owner.
Same recipes, but does it still taste the same as it used to? There's been quite a few things that I loved as a kid, but when I try it as an adult, it's actually horrible (ever try Hawaiian Punch as an adult?). Hopefully Naugles and Pioneer Chicken don't fall into that category.

Rut, you say you're 29, single and have a standing job offer? Why wouldn't you make the move? Do it before any of those three things go away.

Post a reply to: Move to California.? South county...
