I recently changed my fork seals on an 08 yz250f. I've done seals on duel chamber forks before with no problems, usually I just leave the inner chamber alone though.

Anyway, this time on reassembly the inner chamber dampening rod was collapsing under its own weight. I noticed that the 2 oil bleed holes were loosing quite a bit of oil.

I've convinced myself that the inner chamber needs to come apart, has anyone got any ideas what to look for?

Obviously oil needs replacing, but is it common for seals to need doing in the inner chamber?

It sounds as though a seal is leaking. Usually it is on the compression assembly at the top of the inner chamber. I don't know what Yamaha call the part that the seal sits in, but it is white nylon floating piston. It may even be the nylon part itself which has cracked. If these parts are ok I would then look at the seal at the bottom at the cartridge where the piston rod moves in and out.

When I got my 2008 yz450f a few years back, I noticed that the forks were very stiff. No amount of clicker adjustment would solve the issue. They were rideable, but not pleasant. I decided to pull the forks apart so I took the inner chamber out, but didn't have the tool to take the inner chamber apart. When the local shop did it for me they found the cartridges inside were cracked, in fact one of them had a section broken out of it. These cartridges are white, about the same size as the cardboard inner of a dunny roll. I'm no expert on suspension (clearly), but I'd say yours may be cracked too.

Where abouts you in Aus?

I'm in Brisbane. What's the answer if the inner is cracked? Whole new cartridge?

Ah, Sydney here. Yes if they are cracked they must be replaced. My local Yamaha shop stiffed me $120 each! But I'm sure you could find online cheaper if your doing it yourself.
