Hey guys,

Looking to pick up a bike for my brothers to ride and my girlfriend. I know everyone says TTRs/WRs/CRFs but I'd rather not have a small cc trail bike in the garage. I looked at an 85 as I'm a 2 stroke guy but figured I'd be changing plugs all the time, etc. with a new rider. I found a deal on a clean crf150r for $1500 and was seriously considering picking it up as even if it might be a bit more difficult to learn on at first it would be also something to grow into. Thoughts?

No brainer. Buy it. You're welcome

Although the ttr 230 e are pretty cool mellow machines.

It's a good power plant for a learner but for:

1) In my experience, it's very loud and not that many options to make it quieter, at least when we had one

2) Can be difficult to start if not jetted correctly, pretty lean on the pilot. Very short stroke engine.

It's too bad it can't be made quieter and be fitted into a full size frame, like a CR125, as it'd be a great tractable learning bike with enough pop to get someone out of situations, better than a small bore two stroke IMO until the skill level is there to wring out a small smoker.

Im not sure what type of riding they will be doing but my wife has a KTM 105 xc. It lugs pretty darn good suprisingly and has never Fowled a plug( we trail ride almost exclusively). They are very hard to find though. Im not sure on the durability on those 150r's but if you find a used one im sure it would be a good bike for a wife or younger teen.

My wife wanted a crf 150, she rode my sons 85 but it was too much for her power delivery wise, I borrowed an XR 250..... She loved it, so I bought her one, then my son fell in love with it.... So I sold his 85 and now I have 2 XR 250s, heck I even love riding them and I won't loose a single £ on re sale in the future!!!!

So a 2007 in great shape, very clean, running fine, $1500 a good price? Dude was asking $1900.

Good/Fair price. Not sure you will find a better price.

Thanks a bit apprehensive about a 9 year old 4 stroke. I am aware of the camshaft recall on the 07s which was done on this bike.

They're pretty solid bikes. My son raced his 08 bigwheel for about 9 months till he outgrew it. Zero issues. Of all the bikes he has had ( alot ) he says that was the most fun. We ran straight U4.2 and jetted it accordingly. Everything else was bone stock. Valves never moved.

It is really reliable on stock form, you can ride over 100 hours no problem without even checking the valves, just change the oils. Then again, it can be made pretty fast also without losing too much on reliability. Here is our rider Emil Weckman's CRF150R for Finnish Nationals (yes, he has black rims also).
