With what they get in money per student you would think they would be a shining example for the rest of the country. Almost $19,000.00 per student.

A constant theme for some on the campaign trail is ' a bigger investment in education".
How about taking care of the tax dollars they already get?
Why is there such a big fight against charter schools?

And of course there are some from the community, who already have a good paycheck and pension, that think it is necessary to steal from those who need it most and the hard working taxpayers that already pay their salary.

I say disband the Department of Education and their budget of over $75 billion. Many times funds to schools or school districts come with a caveat that they must conform to specific agendas. At what point are there enough public employees? Not only does the number continue to grow but the percentage of public vs private employees continues to grow.
America put a man on the moon 10 years BEFORE the Department of Education was formed.

Is $19,000 a lot per student? How is this number calculated?

I don't know why it would.

Out of curiosity, how many students do you personally have?

According to the above article, the striking teachers have an average of 17.

Seems awfully low.

My sister in law recently retired from the LAUSD (forced out, really), and she had around 40 kids every year.

Our local schools have typically 20-25 per teacher....

That seems about right.

My sister in law was always fighting for under 30, but couldn't make it happen.

It sounds like the politicians need to step up and throw more of our money at the problem. That should fix this. It usually does.

Well for the teachers that deduct pay from their 9 months in school so they recieve a check in the summer....they won't be getting that money. Its their money. So their not being paid their full salary now. Would any of us go to work for 8 hours if we were only being paid for 4 ?

Sounds like the teachers were given an option to take their yearly salary over the course of the school year or smaller checks over the entire year (including summer)
But now the district isn't gonna pay them over summer. Not gonna effect the teachers who elected to receive larger checks during the school year, but teachers who wanted smaller checks aren't getting what they were told they'd be paid. And teachers don't make much to begin with. I hope the school board is taking pay cuts since they expect teachers to...

If they aren't going to be getting their deferred pay, then someone should be charged with theft. That pay should be in an escrow account, you'd think.

It's ok. Michigan house threw money at it.....it'll go away until next year when they don't allow their employees to deduct from their regular salary to supplement the summer. (That's how the board will fix this mess. Not take a salary cut. Hell they'll probably give themselves a bonus for the idea)

Good way to stand together. Good on the teachers.

Teachers can assume it'll be another decade without a raise.

While the school board continues to steal....

Our local school district employees were robbing the district blind with no checks and balances in place. Millions getting siphoned off, no bid contracts for millions being handed out and no one proofing checks going out. Of course the teachers and students were the ones really getting the screwing. FBI finally came in and put the smack down. Quite a few went to the big house.

I like the assholes that retire. Come back the next year for half their salary because they love the children.

Except they're collecting they're full pension and cashed out 29 years of sick days they never took. And they're getting a half salary bonus e wey year after retirement now !!!
