Hi, can anyone help me with a free and simple way to compress GoPro videos?
(I use a Mac, and I'm no geek by any stretch of imagination)
I've had a GoPro Hero3 in a cardboard box for like two years and finally took it out this week-end.
Shot my first movie in 720-60, no problem, transferred it on my Mac and watched it, no problem.
Then I wanted to send it to a friend and noticed my 10 minute vid was like 1500Mo...
Put it on WeTransfer and it's charged about 30% since saturday night...
Dry
Read a lot of stuff sunday about compressing videos, but everyone seems to have a different method and to be honest, I don't get much of the explanations... Just as if if was explaining free sag, race sag, hi/lo speed comp and rebound to a total beginner, lol: could be chinese, I couldn't tell...
Thanks for your help, it'll be appreciated!

Thanks!
I tried it and it got my 1,5go down to 1go.
Still pretty heavy...
Is that what you get or am I doing something wrong?

Sometimes I just use a private account on YouTube and send a link to the video.

Do you have Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro for editing? I can give you compression settings for that.

Have you tried the free GoPro Studio? You can tweak the resolution and quality and thus alter the size of the file.

Use Gopro Studio first to uncompress the original file using the CONVERT thing. Ten I use Adobe Premiere to edit, trim etc, but you could use Gopro Studio. I export that as an AVI with no compression, then convert back to an mp4 usig Quicktime. There are loads of different ways of doing this though.

I'm a total beginner and don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about, lol...
Thanks anyway!

Do you have a iphone? GoPro has an app where you can down the clips right to your phone and post them.

You can compress the file by saving it from QuickTime Pro at a lower quality. Premier pro is really easy to do this as well but from your previous posts it sounds like that's a bit outside your comfort zone. Try this link and see if it helps.

Upload them to youtube. Takes forever but thats the best bet.

From there just remember, 60 fps is DOUBLE the frames of 30fps. Naturally its going to take up a lot of space.

I found some settings tutorial for Handbrake that helped me compress my 10 mn film down to 450ko without losing to much quality...
Takes like 6 hours, though...

Right now, almost everything is out of my comfort zone, lol...
Funny, though, I find the camera in itself real easy to use, but I can't say the same with the compressing and editing software... I guess I'll get used to it in time...

Thanks for your help, all of you!

I just have two settings on the camera: 120 or 60.

Well Youtube ruins often moto videos that are fast pace because of the low bitrate. And it's a huge problem. The gaming industry is really struggling with it at the moment since the modern games are getting better and better looking and Youtube can't handle them.

Here is my example of a video i uploaded about a year ago. The track was as you see smooth and just prepped. That made the speed too high for Youtube and the trees made it even worse. High speed and high detail is a problem for the bitrate. Look how it gets blurry at some parts of the video.

Adobe Media Encoder does the same thing Premiere Pro does for exporting a video, just without the ability to edit. You just import the file, choose the settings and export. If you're going to do this more than once just take a short 2 minute clip and export using different settings to figure out what you like most. I can give you some base line info if you want. You can get Media Encoder or Premiere Pro on a trial for 60 days I believe.

I fortunately have access to Media Composer 8 so I can do pretty much anything with it, but I've been playing around with DaVinci Resolve 12 more lately, and it's pretty damn amazing. Oh, and it's consumer version is free.
