Racer 92, goertz ranch looks good. No stupid tight stuff or mudholes.
I"m trying to find some races like this in the Carolina's this winter but the regional sections of this forum get no love.

Coosa county baby! My stomping grounds, this is where i will train for me and Huck's big showdown! Don't let the open pasture fool you, there are some rocky single track hill climbs that will hurt a fellow.

That's funny. The picture I posted on the previous page to show the dust was from the same race.

Great report Huck! I checked out a little of the single track before I rode and thought that was all of it.. and thought to myself well this won't be to bad. I got talked in to riding AA and got a decent start for a first time harescrambler start. I was around 7th or 8th. I managed to pump up more than a body builder on the first lap and fell three times just in the sand! I was not to optimistic at this point especially since I figured I would be fine in that portion (about 7 or 8 miles) of sand. Well after my armpump went away I was fine and got settled into a nice little rhythm. Then came the single track (which I thought was a very short section) wow was I wrong, it was two miles of motocross riders hell! No bark busters, hand guards, or cut down bars= my knuckles getting in a fight with a lot of trees! The worst part of it was it was a solid rut everywhere you went in the woods... it was alright in some parts but after a few laps of getting deeper they weren't so alright. On my first pit stop I probably wasted at least three minutes. The guy that was suppose to fill my bike up was working on his bike. (He was in the team race so it was his turn to watch for me). Luckily Dirtbikemike's wife Pam was there and everyone kind of assisted and off I went again. I can't describe how whooped out the sand was huck's video doesnt even do it justice especially since that was first lap!. It was whoops everywhere but I had a blast in that part. There is one straightaway of whoops that was every bit of 200 yards long and at 5th gear in them I was just praying if I swapped out the sweeper would take his time checking the trail because there was no telling where I was going to end up. I yelled at so many people just having fun it was an awesome experience. All the people in the woods pointing you where to go so you don't get stuck it was just crazy. I asked some guy if I could borrow his hand guards as he was stopped on the side of the trail either tired or with a broken bike I had no idea but I don't think he found my comment to funny... I laughed though. I ended up 6th as I checked in on the last lap even though I did manage to get stuck in a rut the size of the grand canyon that lap. All in all it was one of the best times I've ever had riding a dirtbike. Anyone remotely close should try to make it out next year.

did you do that race? How'd you do?

It was my favorite this year (not that I have much experience, it was only my second off road race)...and I did really well...10th overall Amateur....2nd in 125 Amatuer....(Though I won my class at the Cherry Creek National in May-my first race-though I finished like 27th overall Amateur).

10th overall on a 125? That’s awesome. I missed it this year. Broke my collarbone at Mesquite and wasn’t healed up yet. I was there working the race instead. I raced it last year. It was only my second desert race as well. I was 38th overall and 3rd in the Over 50 expert class.

10 overall Amateur (I was like 40th or 50th or something OVERALL-with all classes), and I ride a 250F in the 125/200 amateur class.

That was a fun race...it was shorter than the others I did (70 miles) but I got a great start (as you can see from that video), and had a great race....

RD was flying. At least he was when he passed me.

I too yelled at everybody I passed....both Dirtbike Mike and Kaw Rider. lol

I just got back from the car wash. That stuff literally polished my swing arm. My wheels are sparkling too. It took about $15.00 to get it clean, as it was caked!!!

Pure luck on that shot for sure. I spend about 20 minutes with my buddies wife showing her how to use my camera. She didn't know you guys from Adam, but there you go. Sometimes you get lucky!

I remember back in around 2000 or 2001 we had a scramble in Beaumont, and Eric Vallejo showed up for shits & grins and schooled the AA Pro class on a 125. No kidding. All those Pro guys on big bore KTMs and that guy totally checked out on a tiddler !

I really don't understand why I hear from MX guys that off road is easy, unless of course they have actually ridden one.

Excellent thread. Huck glad you had a good experience. Hopefully you will be back for more down the road. After 2 decades of motocross under my belt I switched to Hare Scrambles and now my 2 sons race it too. What a great sport. Huge bang for the buck - 2 Hours of racing for $30, can't beat that. The only problem is Monkey Butt. Nuff said. Get a chance come on out and try an east coast run. We race in the VCHSS but if you care to jump south of the border you also have the North Carolina series and SETRA events.

Here is a clip my son made of one of our Fall races, enjoy:

Thanks for all the great comments guys.

I know some of you don't believe it, but it was actually extremely narrow in spots. The 1.5 (or so) miles in the woods took as long as the 7.5 (or so) miles in the sand did.

Before the car wash...

After $15.00 at the car wash...

Cool race report Huck, why didn't you put on some handguards like I suggested?

Probably didn't use a camleback either, did you get thirsty at all? Oh well there's always next time, are you going to do another?

Looks like fun, that's a great picture! lol

thanks for posting.

You couldn't race our club's hare scramble without bark busters and not come out with broken fingers (or last place). We don't allow quads on our ground so there are no highway sections.. We also usually throw in a few miles of virgin ground and our course is usually between 8 and 12 miles, mostly loam with less than a mile of sand.

No no mikey... I think your "oldtimers" is kicking in. I gave your camelback back to your beautiful bride; and offered to clean it, but she said it's ok and put it in the trailer.

Is it bad that my shoulders are still sore? lol

Gary,

Yes, I used the camelback. It helped out. I didn't have any of the "hard" bark busters. My throttle tube is solid on the end. The hand guards would have made a world of difference in the woods. I'll have some for next race...plus I'll fit in a little better!
