We finished this piece of ebony mist this week for a family, the guy rode a Goldwing brought in a picture of it and they wanted it on there - what do you think, look okay? FYI there is no lithochrome on that for contrast, its all done with hand tooling and steel shot - so it will never change color and look right from here on. (litho goes away in no time and most places just spray litho cuz its fast & cheap)

That's awesome.

How would a guy go about chipping his address and/or name into a big rock that's in front of his house?

Hammer drill?

You put in lettering and numbers by sandblasting. Just lay out the rubber stencil, stamp & cut out the design, glue it on and blast it. Very easy really. That bike has hand tooling with air chisels on it to make for contrast, but typical letters/numbers/panels/outlines and stuff is blasted in. We use steel shot to frost/whiten panels.

If you have something you want lettered/numbered or whatever, shoot me an email with dimensions and I can cut you the stencil and mail it back to ya. Then you can blast it on site.

That is very cool.

Do you use NC cutters for stenciling? What programs do you run if so?

The stencil is cut with plastic dies for lettering/numbers. Put in a press and stamped. There are computer based stencil cutters out there, but its pretty spendy to own one,, so we do it the old way. There is a company in Houston we will get to cut a stencil for us if its a huge amount of lettering like on a 5'x8' flat ledger or something.

In this instance everything was hand cut with an exacto knife because we did not have that type of font/letter die on hand.

Well, that's the badass way.

I also wondered if you might use a die cutter, but someone's still got to make the dies.

My pattern making skills have been all but lost due to the modern day technologies, I sometimes miss those days, but my job has gotten infineatly easier.

When it comes to flowers, vines, folded hands, etc, and any other type of shape carving, that is all hand cut and hand blasted and this is where talent comes in. Most companies just blow in the outlines and spray black litho in there and leave it at that. Looks sooo cheesey but most folks dont know the difference. It takes lots of patience, talent and time to put in good 3-D shape carving.

I bet it was tough not blowing the stencile off of that. Here is a couple that we laser etched on Oriental Black. We have done some pretty cool stuff. These are a few that I had on my home computer. Billy Ursic

Yeah, you gotta be very careful to not blow out the stencil on small stuff like that, but its easier to control its done by hand with a small pot - you can see whats happening up close with the hood on.

We've sent off stuff to be lasered like that - some people request it.

I can't read the guy's name in that font, but other than that it looks cool.

Man, that's cool. I was out in an old country cemetary last winter in Yoakum, and I noticed that so many headstones just had, "Joe Smith 1934-1998" or something like that. It just struck me that a person's life just can't be shrunk down to a name and a date. I know it's tradition, but I really liked the ones that had a scripture or a verse from a poem or something like that - it makes them "real" people. The Goldwing is perfect.

But it should have been a Harley, I'm just sayin'.

Yessir, thats a serious generator.

The one we use on the main curtain looks about like this:

As I recall it holds about 1000 lbs of sand and about 100psi open line.

Here's one in use...The smaller vessel in front is an air dryer and the tanks on either side are vac collection bottles. You can barely see the liquid ring vacs behind the each bottle. Its a nightmare of hoses, ducting and electrical cable...Compressors are staged on the ground to facilitate fueling, lots of fueling...three 1300 CFM commpressors and a 150 kw generator running WFO burns it up pretty quick.
