1987 Buick Grand National--anyone have one?

If its all original that seems like a good price. Be warned they are couches. Nothing sporty about them. Just fast. A good friend had one back in 87. I would get motion sickness in it going down the freeway. Very plush ride.

I have a friend with a super low mileage GNX. Think it has less than 7000 on the clock. Those were pricey to begin with, don't think they've gotten any cheaper.

I've got a friend that is in love with these thing's. (Has thousand's of dollars in his)I never really had any respect for them until I rode in it. Look good and go like hell.....but it's still just a 6cyl IMO.

Nephew has one. Guy across the street also has one. The nephew could probably be talked out of his. Expect 'after a teenager owned it' condition. Not even sure it is running right now. But pretty doggone fast for a big, fat, GM street car with a V-6 in it.

I never owned one but, have fond memories of them.

In 1986, when I was in High School, street racing was huge in the area I lived in. My buddies and I would hang out on Saturday nights at a local road that hosted tons of street racing action. Lot's of Big/Small block Camaros,Chevelles,Mustangs and Mopars with a few Pontiac products thrown in. Most of the cars were running in the 12 and 13 second 1/4 mile range, with a few in the very high 11's.

Anyway, this guy shows up one winter night with an 86 Grand National and running M&H tires. He was probably in his early fifties. Looked very White Collar and un-assuming. At the time, no one really knew much about the GN, other than it was a 6 cylinder Buick with a Turbo Charger. Most didn't even give it a second look. Turns out this guy was an Engineer and was developing after market mods for Buick T-charged cars and had a very intimate knowledge of the Buick TC motor. Most people shrugged this guy off and didn't want to put the wear and tear on their beloved Camaro just to show up a 6-cylinder Buick.

He finally sets up a race with a Big Block Nova....probably a high 12 second car. Within the first 1/8th mile, the Grand National put 4-6 car lengths on this guy and then proceeds to back out of it. Everyone was just completely stunned and in utter dis-belief. What the hell had just happend? All I knew was, the Nova got waxed. It was over in the first 60 feet. The GN launched so hard off the line, I thought the front left wheel was going to come off the ground. I guess folks should've known the GN owner knew what he was doing when he showed up with the M&H's. Of course the Nova owner was making excuses as soon as he exited his car after the race. "I spun off the line", "missed third gear", "he's running Nitrous",etc, etc.

After the Nova, everyone wanted a piece of this guy. Needless to say, he totally decimated everyone that night. Everyones excuse was that he was using Nitrous, because there was no way in hell a little six cylinder could beat a mighty V-8. It was funny though, after that night, he couldn't get a race. Everyone was frightend of this car. Turns out, he had a chip, an adjustable waste gate, and an intercooler mod. All but the chip, he developed himself. The guy is a legend on the Houston street racing scene. I think he went on to start his own company, developing and selling mods for Buick T/C cars. I know he bought a GNX and a Cyclone along the way. He was also an avid collector of Buick Muscle cars too.

As an aside, a college budy of mine who had an 87 Grand National when he was in High School, bought a 1989 20th anniversay Trans Am from a collector in Illinois. It only had a few thousand miles on it and it had the Buick T/C motor in it. I rode in the car on several occasions and to this day am still amazed at the brute acceleration of it. It was odd, becuase the car was relatively quiet under power. All you could hear was the Turbo winding up but, holy shit did that thing accellerate!!! He also had a chip with an adjustable boost system. That was/is my favorite car of all time. It was very unique, as is the 86-87 GN.
Heck, even after 22 years, the GN still looks bad-ass.

If you are serious about buying one, I think I know of one that is for sale. It's in damn near perfect condition, though. I think it is the GNX, it's definitely fast as hell.

My dad used to own one of those similar bodied Monte Carlo SS cars, 1984 I think. It was a fun car to drive back then, not sure I'd really like it much today though.

Yup, I had an 87. Kenne Belle programmer, adjusted waste gate, big exhaust, mild head work, modded intercooler, and a Kenne Belle cam in it.

Never ran it on the strip, but I have ridden in lots of 11 to 12 second cars, and it was right in there. It got 25 mph on the highway with the cruise on. It was my family car for a couple years. Blew it up, had to pull the engine again, and rebuild it. That was funny, cause this little wee 231 V-6 sitting on the engine stand was cool.

I had Cragar Drag Stars on it, with fats and skinnys. Tinted windows, looked alot like the one in the picture. They had a pretty lopey idle, real deep with Flowmasters on it, so it looked and sounded pretty bad at an intersection. If you heated the tires real good, that thing would LAUNCH. I started to get cracks in the cab pillars up by the windows, due to flex in the body. If I would have kept it, I would have put subframe connectors, and ladder bars in it.

This one is pretty much showroom fresh, maybe taken out of the shop twice a year tops. I think it's closer to 30K on the miles, though, and probably only about 5K miles in the last 10 years or so. Hasn't seen snow at all.

Average retail on the car is around 80K.........

Volcati, the one you are looking at looks really clean. Makes me want another one! They will be a great investment I think.

Just check the bottoms of the doors, and the rocker panels, and the hinge areas on the doors. Thats where they rusted first.

Lenny, is that thing street legal? It looks like it would be a pain in the ass just keeping the front wheels on the ground.

GN's are cool cars.

Yessir, about 1000 HP, when I rode it it he said we were running at round 800, because the boost was turned down, and no race gas. A guy bugged him from Canada to sell it, and when he finally came down to see it, he had everything dialed in. He said he tromped on it, looked over and Dude looked like he was getting sick. He said "Fuck it, I can't buy this car, I'll kill myself"...
