Most black Cuban immigrants, Jamaicans, Haitians and other black folks of Caribbean decent DO NOT like the term "African American" and do not like having that as their only ethnic choice on applications, surveys or other things requiring a label.
They do not consider themselves from Africa, but only from their respective homelands.
Now, if you want to say the cliché of their originally being from Africa, that would apply to EVERYONE as it is widely accepted that we all originated from the African or Middle Eastern region.
IMO, the term African American is actually disrespectful towards black folks from other countries and regions and unfairly labeled them without consideration.
You knew what was meant by the use of the term in relation to James Stewart
You stirred shit just to stir shit
You could've (and should've) left it alone.
You are as much to blame as P's expected responses

The black experience in America is completely different than growing up in Africa. You have to look at history and the history behind the word to understand why it is used.
P[/quote:1ly2emvn]I don't care why it is used. Hell, I don't care about what blacks have been through. I care about paying my mortgage. I care about raising my kids to be productive members of society. I don't care who killed Kennedy anymore than I care who killed MLK. It is the past, let it die. Worry about making the future better instead of dwelling on the past.[/quote:1ly2emvn]
Dude, that is a very telling post. How do you expect the future to be any better if you don't know and understand your past???

Rent???
P[/quote:29fpzji3]
Sorry didn't know if you rented or had a mortgage but I assumed you weren't living at home above the garage.
African-American isn't used within the black community to describe black people from other countries.

And you would assume that because??? Oh yeah, that's right you don't answer questions so I probably shouldn't ask.
P
same to you and your ilk.[/quote:23an29sl]
Just what "kind" or ilk are you referring to?
P
African-American isn't used within the black community to describe black people from other countries.
P[/quote:ye5fw0up]
Then how/why is it used?[/quote:ye5fw0up]
It is used in reference to black people that were born in America, but are of African decent. Do you guys not know anything about the 1970's and the Black Power movement?
P
Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti, Seirre Leone, Ghana, Niger, Egypt, Nigeria etc
And none of them refer to themselves as African American. When asked they say they are Ghanan, or Nigerian, or Cuban etc.[/quote:gekulyke]
That is because they aren't African-American.
P
No I don't. The Black Panthers turned my membership application down.
Started in the mid-60's and carried over into the 1970's. You probably saw more affects of it in the 70's than you did in the 60's.

Stop looking at it...seems like a pretty simple solution if it offends you!
That is because they aren't African-American.

neither are you, P.

P[/quote:28gnqqwo]
I know I said "one comment," sorry
The term may not be used within the "Black community" (another term I dislike, as if there's a "White community") but it is used to group or segregate all Blacks into one group on forms and applications as well as general speech.
Let's not forget that due to pressure and political correctness, TV/Media has been arm-twisted into using this term for all Blacks or risk being label "insensitive" or "racist," regardless of nationality of the Black person being referred to.
I think another issue, and one I have also mentioned in the past, is how the name or terminology used to describe or segregate Blacks has changed over the years from Negro, to Blacks, to Afro-American, to now African-American...and that's just a couple examples. One has to admit it creates some confusion and just adds to the issue.
