Wargo.......wow, he was faast. Remember him. Sorry to the guy regarding a race in 79 held there, I even asked Houtermans and he remembers the HS being the last in 78....I trust ya; just can't figure how that one slipped by me......

I saw Jan Houtermans today; was surprised he didn't even know about the great possiblity of the event going....

Yeah, Jan said Jerome Heiberger was one of the most natural talented riders he's seen.....I mentioned I chat with you bobby on this site and he sends his best....

I wanted Jan to tell Losh to call me because he serviced the machines for the company I worked for then; one day in '78, Randy says he's riding at the little track that you could see at the Jefferson Blvd exit in West Sac. I show up and decided not to bring bike and get in Randys way. Stay an hour, so, then leave. Next time I see him, he tells me right after I left, he crashed and broke his leg...He was alone....I still don't know how he got his bike in van or if someone happened to see a sprawled out person and a motorcycle; dont remember. Up until he left Canteen and I left my job in '95, we'd bench race. Had that Losh grin...like his top lip would fold.....lol.

Over 3 hours at Jan's......I had the best bench racing chat in a really long time....this new era of racing; sometimes rather watch MotoGP and even Nascar.....dont care what anyone thinks of him negatively; he's just Jan and a treasure of info and travels. He's mine and a lot of others friend. Darrell stopped by in January, Wosick in May, Lesniewski periodically and the usual suspects and ol Dave Longcor as well. He was pumped about Plymouth having a race again. And he actually went to a race at Honey Lake and went to MX des Nations this year....world record for him going to any races here in states, but he had the most fun at MX des with the crew he was with....Love how he calls the factory and good support mechanics and personnel "the shirts". I loaned him 500 KX for the last Hollister 500 World GP in 89 with a broken tranny; he buys me a PC pipe and really fixed the bike nice... Jo Martens was the rider...I hadn't seen him in a good bit and outta blue he heard I had the KX; didnt care it was broke, just bring it......Funny to me cause when his voice came on the phone Im wondering what the heck is Jan calling me for....we all have those funny things; outta the blue stuff...

I really thought Waxham was going places for a while; seen him ride at many tracks. Mike Hersmann on Husky's used to be solid at times...Ben Crocco use to practice at track in west sac next to chp academy......I saw him like in 86 and he was telling me he got paralyzed neck down yrs before and he was out at the west sac track you went over the metal bridge and turned left...use to call it honda hills and mostly sand. So Crocco just kept talking and I kept thinking what was he smoking; the way he described it was so unbelievable...Just saw him that one time....Local Jim Ellis use to ride there a bit

I remember Plymouth used to be like hard in many sections seemed like when you were going toward the finish of National track.

Amen. THE BEST track of all time. Rough and tough.

Anybody remember the AMA Amateur National Championship they held there back in 1979 ? Awesome event.[/quote:29dut8us]
I remember the AMA Amateur National. Eric McKenna won his class. I had a $100 bill that I showed McKenna on the starting line of the first moto and told him if he won it was his. Eric won the first moto, so on the starting line of the second moto I ripped it in half and handed him half. I told him he won the first half and now you have to win the second half. He won the second moto as well, so I gave him the second half. Eric tried to buy dinner for his family that night with it and the waitress wouldn't take it being ripped apart. He was able to spend it later.
Being an "Amateur" race, I checked with Hugh Fleming, the AMA Official to be sure the payout would not make him a Pro and get him protested. Hugh said it was Ok.

I just called Eric's home, and he is at work. I talked to his wife Cheryl and she confirmed it was 1979, and Eric beat Alan King from back East. Alan wasn't prepared for the rough track and didn't train for it. Alan thought there would be no one out West that would be able to beat him.---This is what Alan told McKenna afterwards when he congratulated Eric.
I told Cheryl about this race to be, and she said Eric would be very interested in any race at Plymouth. I looked Eric's phone number up on the internet, so it is not unlisted. Eric lives in Loomis, Ca.

Jerome Heiberger works down the street from me, or did. He came to my shop a couple of years ago to give me a price on a product his company makes, he saw that we do moto stuff and starts telling me this story about his friend claiming a factory bike, and how he raced it. I figure, great, one of these guys who starts telling you stories while you're pumping gas about how he used to be sponsored by Honda. The he mentions the name John Roeder, holy shit, this guys for real. He races mountainbikes, I think he said he hadn't ridden in 3 or 4 years but I bet he could bust out 3 motos in a heartbeat. I think he was the one that hooked Terry Good up with Roeder to buy it a couple of years ago.

Yeah, I found that 5 minutes after he walked out the door. On top of that, the place he works or worked is Benchmark Thermal in Grass Valley. Look at the name of the general manager. http://www.benchmarkthermal.com/profile.html

I've had the "pleasure" of chasing McKenna around the past couple of years in the Masters class of the OT's club (along with Willie M, Shaun H and others, and I was getting all excited about turning 50 in Feb and getting away from some the 45'ish youngsters in the 40+ class. Eric and I were joking about it this past spring at the Phx race and he tells me he's 49 also.

Damn. More roost next year. At least we're getting away from a few of the "kids."

If you go to that Roeder website,( http://vintagefactory.com/marty_tripe.htm )and click on the picture of him standing with his back to you at the starting gate, that is me standing in front of him with the lath in my hand. (it's the one with the red honda gear). He was talking to me at the gate. The starting gate was my gate from Marysville that the Dirt Diggers borrowed because that was the first year that AMA required a backwards falling gate, and I had one. I was using the lath to clean rocks out of the gate crack after every start. That picture shows up in magazines about every ten years. My hair like everyones was a bit longer then.

Man! This is huge! I used to live in Placerville and Plymouth was the place we went to see the stars. This thing could really get some traction and be the next big thing on the West Coast. Some one should post this news everywhere!

We might even be there with cameras rolling!

Whoa! If this race does happen and the MX-Files crew shows up to film that would be awesome. I bet the turn out would be huge.

What a great site!

I am an ex-pro who ran the 250 and 500 Nationals from 77 to 79. My career was cut short by a severe case of carpal tunnel.

A recent article by Jarrett Newby prompted me to view the intermission clip of One Chance to Win. I immediately ordered a copy.

Hannah hasn’t changed a bit. Jorski should have pulled that underwear over Hannah’s head! :D

I ran the Hangtown National in 78. That track was a blast. It would be great if the AMA still had the full moto by moto results.

That's cool. I met Mark Rakestraw at my local riding spot in '79 and he was the guy that first talked me into racing.

Next week we should know for sure. Nice for all the posts and enthusiam.

Those '78 results were when Hannah lapped up to Howerton both motos. And Chandler feet up on that high speed sweeper on the RM...I thought the KTM was '78, but had to be '77, yr Richter was MX Fox Suzuki. But that sweeper only DC did feet up..seemed more crowded there than anywhere else....

Werent they 40 min plus 2 laps or straight 45 mins? Now 30 min plus two.....what happened to being the toughest sport next to soccer? Better equipment, shorter motos; don't make sense.

What happened to you BobbyM not doing '78; was waiting for 500's to start? I watched and believe got slides of you at local Plymouth races in '78. Remember Schaffer doing dash for cash when Parry Klassen, Magoo, Shultz, newski, maybe you, but recall you seemed more strickly a 500cc rider. Klassen and those thumbs; how he was as good as he was still amazes me.

MX 30 min plus 2 laps; use to be sport of champions....now of....no comment. Kid sport more than MANS sport. Seat jump, preload, rear brake tap for front end down.....better stop before I say something wrong. 45min motos showed the real men from the wanna be's.

BobbyM,

I raced the Nationals, Regionals, Support Class at GPs and the Winter AMA in 77 – 79. I was primarily an East of the Mississippi rider.

I was not a top 10 or a name rider at the time. My results were typically in the 15th-25th overall range at Nationals. Top 5 at regionals and support. I qualified for all the Nationals I entered. Probably my best result (but not my best race) was top 3 at Unadilla in the support class in 79. I also ran top 5 consistently in the Winter AMA in Florida. I liked sand and was best in sand. I did finish second to Wardy at Saddleback the day before the Carlsbad GP in 78. The track was like concrete but had rail like berms which I liked and did well at.

My career was cut short because of a severe case of carpal tunnel. Oddly enough my career ending injury didn’t occur at the track. It happened when I got very aggressive with a post hole digger putting in a horse fence. I did about 5 days of work in 1 day and I paid dearly for it. It wrecked the ligaments in my wrists. I struggled into mid 79 and eventually quit cold turkey never to return to MX.

What’s your story?

I raced 78 for about one lap. damn near last off the line and pushed it to 4th in less than a lap. i then ran over lance mcphee of losh or somebodys downed maico and crashed my brains out. ruined my brand new electro custom named helmet first time i wore it. i was cookoo and didn't ride the 2nd moto, should have won with ease as the year before when i got 2nd in the open. next year 79 at Prairie city i lost a chain while leading mckenna.....damn. no luck i tell ya...lol

Knew it had to be something in line with that......if I find any pics of you from the Plymouth days, Ill let ya know. All on slides and I got I think now a couple hundred to look thru...dont hold your breath anytime soon....lol since I don't have a slide projector anymore Bobby.....

If you go to that norcalmotocross.com site and under thread name that rider, ol Charlie Sexton posted a laundry list, I mean long list of experts back in the day......Now a days, maybe a couple pros at a local race, max. Perry Shermans kid Tony and Brad Kelly, and now Jeff Mann Jr. is going to try the SX/MX. Sad no good local pro races anymore.

Its all World MINI, Ponca, Lorettas.......I thought a sport was built on grass roots and just kept growing and growing and......

feeling its going to bite the industry in the ass eventually......

FTE, it was that end of '78 season HS or CC D-36 held in horrendous conditions, muddy n windy, yes and I tried and left as well. Remember over a bullhorn or whatever it being announced that was the last ever race being held there. I didn't remember writing 1 or 2 local CN's of the Am Nat'l Qualifiers in '79 that I found either.

A guy from back in the day with Gene's Auto gang then DW and Dave Duarte msg'd me. Initially thought being hacked, but called Dave to make sure. Leaving the really cool guy's name out, but he had went to see the place and couldn't see much of it after Glover visited it with cameras inside the fenced off track and put in the Hangtown telecast. He wanted to know why that 2008 race never happened and I forgot. He said several reasons and I remembered. Most prob know anyways.

The city added conditions and stipulations that couldn't be met in time or made the race fiscally unfeasible. The late Bugsy showed unannounced to talk to the OR promoter off in the distance when the rest were trying to locate any trails left of the Nat'l track or talked with the landowner. Almost 15 yrs later, no different. Remember the cyanide rumor that supposedly closed it or couldn't get it reopened after the Am Nat'l again. .
