Build my own swing arm bearing removal/installer

Hi guys

I'm in the process of replacing the hearings in my swing arm and suspension pivot arm ( think that's what it's called :-) ). Anyway seals and washers are out and just left with the bearings.. I have read on various threads that people either use a vice or build their own tool to press the bearings out safely without causing damage. I'm interested in making my own. Has anyone ever done this?

Is it a case of a trip to the hardware store to get a thread, bolts and some washers ( I have sockets already). This may sound silly but how does it all work?

I use a peice of 1/2" all thread with a couple washers and nuts. Works like a charm and doesn't crush the bearing as easy as a vice does.

Thanks for the reply, so the idea behind it is

Thread all the way through
socket up against bearing with a washer and nut behind it
Tighten nut so it pushes up against the washers, thus pushing the bearing

Is that about right?

Yes works great, some heat on swingarm can help free up and install easier

For years i used sockets and a hammer, you can tap them out and in no problem. Than i got my hands on a bench vice, very large one, i used sockets and the bench vice, now i have a press.

all get the job done no problem.

I just rebuilt my linkage and swingarm on my project bike. The swingarm bearing came out no problem but the linkage was pretty tough. When I took the linkage apart all the bearing fell out and the races where rusted and had no lip to push against. my kit came with a extra bearing so I used that with my press to push the old out and then cleaned it up and put new bearings in. If you do it this way make sure the needles stay in the bearing your using to push with because if you don't then the bearing will collapse like the old bearings
