Can you still get preston petty fenders

I'll have to buy some just to celebrate!

I'm buying as well. And I have to send this to a guy I know trying to get $400 a piece for nos Tony D PP's. His stock just took a big hit.

$ 400.00 ouch !!!!
We are still going over all of the costs such as unit,FOB California,Labels, tooling,bags etc.. but we are really really close on announcing what our "buy in" special price will be.
We want to sell Preston Petty fenders and products not price them so that we have to marry them.
Mike Murphy being involved for 30 years + with Rokon and myself 30 years + with Hodaka understand a small nitch market.
We really feel that the prices we are thinking will be what most everyone will think is more than fair. Most guys do not care what we have invested in time and money and we do not blame them.
The bottom line is what will they cost?? They will be lower than the UFO Vintage which is the only other reproduction fender that is in fact injected molded. They will be cheaper than what we see some of the vacuum formed reproduction fenders like the Maier brand are being sold for.
What we have going for us is

What year did the die cut 'PETTY' logo decal come out? I am thinking '79 as i have seen it on one of Bob Hannahs works bike under the moulded in 'Front' on the Tony D..

That's ridiculous; NOS they don't go for a lot more on Ebay than the old repopped ones used to and certainly not that much more than these

To the best of my knowledge the "PETTY" logo decal on the sides of the front of your Tony D fender came out in 1979 or 1980 when Scott purchased the company from Preston. I have not seen many of these.

You mentioned Bob Hannah's Works bike? From what Preston has told Mike and myself the Hannah/ Tony D story went something like this. There was a race at Unadilla back in the 70's where everyone who was anyone was there to race. Preston was there also and with some of his fenders to show everyone. Bob Hannah broke his front fender and Preston went over and handed him one of his new MX Front fenders to replace the broken Yamaha front fender. Bob loved the looks of the new fender but Yamaha would not allow this fender to be put onto Bob's bike. It had to be a Yamaha fender. Caused a little issue......

Tony D saw the fender and said he wanted one for the front of his bike. That is how the fender ended up being called the "Tony D" and not the "Bob H" :-)

I am familiar with the Petty logos on the side wings and was not actually referring to those. was meaning the decal that many put on that narrow strip under the molded logo right at the front of teh fender. I will see if i can find. I think this is before Scott took over.

Ok this is it on the 79 OW40 Yamaha, so i guess it was around in 79 but do you know exactly when this logo first appeared?

Preston is already up this morning even though it is 6:00 am in California.
He say's that these decals were supplied with the fenders that Scott made after they purchased the company from him. So 1979 would be about right.

"(just black letters on a clear tape)" is what Pres said but Mike has some that are also blue.

Ok Thanks. I also have some in white and have seen them on the headlight number plates. I was hoping they were around in 77 so i could use them on a 77 bike. But i am building some 80-82 bikes with Petty stuff so can use this decal on those bikes at least. I like to aim for period correctness I have not forgotten about scanning that stuff for you too. I found a few pages of Petty stuff that probably no one recently has seen and that i have never seen on ebay before.

I learn all the time about the Preston Petty line. Having Preston just a phone call away makes doing this so much fun. Not a day goes by where Mike and I learn something new about Preston Petty Products.I am finishing up all the loose ends today for the launch of the MX Front ( Tony D ) fenders. We should have the "buy in" prices posted by tomorrow.
We are really excited about this! Next fender tool will be the MX Rear fender.

Since I am a bit north of you, can I stop by and pick mine up in person? ( I say this in jest, assuming distribution will be handled somewhere else besides SW Vermont.)

Ok so i am confused as to what yellow colour to order. What are people ordering to match NOS Petty yellow plastics from the 70's? or to match other yellow plastic currently sold by PP? what are people ordering to to match 1976 -1981 suzuki plastics?

How long wlll price stay at $60? I dont think i am going to have the money to order any till at least 26th Dec.

The original Petty's came in one shade. The red didn't match either the Honda or the Maico (closer to the Maico). The yellow did not match either the Yamaha or Suzuki (closer to the Yammie IMO).

As to what the color was based on, there are originals kicking about. The original black, blue, silver and white didn't really match anything at all. I guess the orange matched Can Am's as much.

If you want something harking back enough to want a petty embossed version, IMO I'd want it as I could have gotten it back in the day, not to remake it to match, say, Tahitian Red. But it's all good. Really grateful for then effort put into getting these back in production.

I feel exactly the same way. I recall the original Petty yellow as a bit light for Suzuki, and more true "yellow" than Philolina Yellow. But when mounted and from a few feet away it blended well enough. For a true resto, I prefer that than a perfect color match. They didn't then, so to do so now is incorrect. That's the main reason I still want an NOS original for my Fox bike. I have ordered a new Petty and applaud the effort, but am hoping for a match to the old version.

A few months ago i bought 2 NOS Petty rear fenders and one was a decent yellow, and pretty much the same other old/nos genuine Petty stuff i had but the other yellow fender was a horrible lemon sort of yellow. Totally did not match any other Petty plastic i had and was not going to go well with Suzuki stuff either so returned it. Not sure if it was just from a dud batch or what. It was a Mudder rear.

I think back in the 70's, "close enough" was the gold standard. Look at photos of the factory bikes. Electrical tape for numbers. They used the same fenders and plastic all season. Duct tape on helmets and visors. The factory gods actually wore the same leathers and jersey for all three motos.

A friend recently did a concourse restoration of his '55 Corvette. He went through a huge amount of effort to make sure the paint, repairs, fiberglass work were period correct, since in this day and age, fit and finish can be or is done to a much higher standard.

One of my bikes will have all Petty plastic. Do you think 'dark' yellow would be a close enough match the the originals? Maybe i will wait till someone has bought some and see what their opinions are since i dont want to order some and then find out i would be better off with the other yellow as its far too expensive to send fenders back to USA to swap the colour.

What you are all describing is EXACTLY what we have been up against since the start. This is why I do not wish to call any color a specific brand such as "Suzuki" or "Yamaha" etc..
I am happy with calling the blue "Bultaco " thanks to Tim Weaver.
Can Am Qualifier orange was a different shade of orange compared the the Can Am MX orange. ( dark orange and pumpkin orange)

All I can say is that we have spent months and months getting correct color matches to brand new original Preston Petty fenders. We have split hairs to get it right. We have sent some specific color chips to some of our respected friends in the vintage motorcycle world to get their personal opinions.
I truly doubt anyone has gone through this same time and effort to get the colors "right".

I am keeping track of who orders what color for what specific model and brand bike. I will put this into an excel sheet to keep good records but until we have these in our hands and they are sent out to the folks who have taken advantage of the "buy in" special we do not know what the feelings will be.

Mike and I will be bringing any fenders we have left over from the "Buy in" to the York Swapmeet in York PA on January 17th. So if you care to come there you can physically see the colors and fenders up close.

Since you can physically the new fenders and your current/Nos stuff can you tell me which of the new Tony D yellows will best match NOS 70's Petty plastic or lets say a headlight or integral tail light fender currently on your website?. Thats what i really want to know. I don't really expect a close match to OEM suzuki yellow as that stuff is fairly mustardy in colour. I would like to buy before the sale ends because even at $60 they are fairly expensive by the time i factor in weak conversion to AUD so i want to get these colour issues sorted first so i know what to order and get them at the cheapest price. Would posting a photo of the 2 colours.next to a NOS part be any help do you think? Thanks

To best answer your question both the light yellow and the dark yellow are an exact match to original Preston Petty fenders. He made two different shades of yellow. In the photo below you will see a headlight numberplate that I call the "Dark Yellow" to the right of it is an IT rear fender which I call the "light yellow".
I absolutely and totally understand your concerns! Shipping to Australia is very expensive.
I just do not want to commit to anyone that these colors fit a specific brand or model. I can say that these colors we have chosen do represent exact matches of original Preston Petty fenders. Unfortunately there were two different yellow shades.

Yes we are hoping to have an Australian dealer. I have spoken via email to someone that was highly suggested to me.
I initially asked my friend Geoff Ballard but he is selling his business and this might complicate things for his sale.
We have not spoken to Maxwell's/VMX Unlimited.
We understand the need to someone in Oz to be able to bring these in to your country via a container and offer at a fair price. Sending fenders or parts to my friends in Australia like Rob "Shoey", Steve-O, Tex, John or Ken Smith I understand what the costs are as I have to charge my friends what it actually costs to ship.
I hope this helps and if you care to let me know what make/model/year you are thinking of putting these fenders on I can let you know what most people so far have ordered if this might help.

Let me add please that the "dark yellow" ( headlight numberplate) matches exactly the yellow that is used on the "post Vintage" numberplates here in the U.S. and also the same yellow that Preston used to make his yellow numberplates.

Thanks for the info. I can see the difference in the photo, the headlight looks the same as what i have and i have some MX rears that are close to that, perhaps a little darker even. I reckon you could say there was a 3rd original yellow which was a lemon yellow too and was the colour of a mudder rear i got and then returned it when i no where near matched any other Petty or suzuki yellow. I am not sure if this was just from an odd batch or there really was this lemon yellow offered for a few years.

This weekend I will drag out my NOS headlights, IT rear fenders, MX rears and a couple of Tony D's and see if i can figure out what to order. Might miss the pre sale but i would rather work out what to order first. Maybe if i have money available i will order a couple and then choose colour later, but its doubtful i will have the money before the 26th. You know what this time of year is like with christmas shopping, have not recovered from black friday sales yet!

I am not sure what you mean by 'post vintage number plates' Who's part are they? I do have one of those holeshot numberplate headlights from the 'Scott' era. From memory that is a little darker. I want this stuff for a 77 TS and it will have all Petty plastics so i don't have to worry about matching the new Tony D's to anything, other than existing NOS Petty stuff i have.

Do you have an estimated date of when the oval number plates will be available?

Are the headlight number plates that you are currently selling, still NOS from the 70's or newer ones you have been making? Are they still in production, is there any chance of them becoming NLA soon? I just want to know if i have time to pick one up in the new year. I keep getting emails about 'closeouts' on some of this stuff.

I will do my best to address your points made in this post.
The above photo I posted makes the headlight numberplate look a little darker than it really is.The photo was taken with a high res camera with a flash indoors. Photos that were taken outside in the daylight did not truly show the color differences as seen in this photo posted below.

If you can please send me photos of what you are trying to match to I would gladly try and help to advise you. Are you anywhere near Sydney? I think Ken Smith still might have a couple of my fenders I gave to him and this might help you at least to match what you need.

"Post Vintage" here in the USA is an AHRMA class for bikes manufactured after 1978 I believe.

Were you at Classic Dirt last June?? If so I had my fenders and headlights there on display.

Preston actually made the "holeshot" headlight numberplates and Scott took over after him.

The oval numberplate tool is complete and I believe we will have the Preston Petty oval numberplates available at about the same time ( Late December) as the MX Front fenders.

The headlight numberplates I am selling now are reproductions. The tool was not made to last so we need to retool and we are already receiving quotes for a new steel tool from Acerbis and other manufactures. We will always have these available. We may run short in between the old tool and the new tool but we will continue to make these along with our new LED bulbs to fit.

I do want to say that it was pointed out to me yesterday that our shipping was crazy high. The gentleman ( Phil) was correct. Something happened with our website that changed and only was allowing 2nd Day and next day UPS shipments. The first two days of sales allowed USPS priority mail shipments and UPS ground shipments so we have no idea what or why things were changed but we have fixed the shipping issue late last night so shipping prices are right on.
