RMZ Basket Case

There's a local guy around my area with a 2008 RMZ250 that is in pieces, motor and all. Said that he rode it for one year in 2008, put a new piston and rings in it and had the valves recut, then something in the bottom end exploded (needs new tranny) right after the top end was put in. He needs to sell it now, I imagine it's taking up a ton of room in his garage and he isn't mechanically apt enough to fix it.

Well, I am very mechanically apt and have all of the necessary equipment and resources to get the motor back in working order. Is a project like this work getting into for under $600?

I'd buy it. Just make it a long term project and spend your time scouring ebay for the best prices. Four strokes ain't worth rebuilding usually, price wise, but if u can get it for $600 that's not bad. Or put a two stroke motor in the frame and use the stock four banger for target practice.

Perfect donor bike for a 2 stroke transplant! Just sayin.....

I would give around $500 for it, but I am also capable of doing all the motor work myself. If you are in the same boat and don't have to pay anyone to do any of the motor work, you could get it going again and have a decent bike. Just keep in mind you won't make any money off of it if you do it right. If it needs a donor tranny + piston + valve-train, etc you'll be into it $1500 pretty easily.

Take a really close look at the cases, cylinder, and head. If any of those are damaged, I probably would not recommend buying it to put it back together with that motor.

I know one of the side covers is broke, but the center cases are ok. I'll have to take a closer look at things, but from what I was told, the top end is still brand new, but you never know with people these days.

I am skeptical about these newer 4 stroke motors being rebuilt -- how durable can they be if something small is out of tolerance. Can't be great.

i had that same bike and it was a blast to ride, turned great and had enough motor at the time.

If you can get it cheap, buy it and put a CR500 in it. Yes, it can be done!
