Hi Jake,

how awesome was the Pro Circuit 125 that you were featured riding in MXA July 2010 issue?

Which size two stroke do you think would be fair to race in the 250F class (example: 144 / 151 / 167 / 250cc)?

Thanks for answering our questions & hope you get back to 100% good health soonSmile

Youve been around the circuit for a number of years now and perhaps know a city or two pretty well.

Is there a restaurant or destination in each stop of the sx series that you like to hit each time you go through that city? Any favorites?

Jake, thanks for doing this. I have enjoyed watching you race and all of the media stuff you have done.

I notice that you are fairly critical of yourself. I picked up in interviews and different media stuff including Mathes that Ryan Villopoto is pretty brutal with the crap talking. Of course that is normal among ridding buddies but the impression I got is that he takes it too a little higher level. Then of course there is the fact that he was winning and often by a fair margin. I saw some video taken at RVs where you were sitting off from everyone else the last year you were Aldon. Did RV's crap talking contribute to you seeking a new training situation? It just seemed like everything was going so right for him and that things just never clicked like it could have for you. If you could talk about how you felt prior to making that change.
I am critical of myself and that is something that some would say could be a downfall of mine, maybe true. Its always difficult to find the line to walk when you care about something and have expectations and want more. I try to be better about that but sometimes its just tough when you are frustrated with yourself.
As far as the RV crap talking. That was never a problem. Ryan is like that with his friends and we all get a kick out of it. We were all friends and it was never taken personal. Just buddies sitting around talking smack.

That 125 was sooo much fun. I could actually turn pretty similar times as a 250f. Its hard to say what would be competitive against a 250f, I have never rode a 144, 151,167. Its just so hard to compare because you ride the bikes so differently. Plus now days the 250f's are putting out crazy amount of power so I don't know. I love 2 strokes but I hate to tell you I think that ship has sailed.

Its a little tough for us to do the tourist stuff and check everything out when we are racing. Fly in friday and have a signing sometimes and than early flight Sunday morning. Usually for SX we are staying at major cities and nicer hotels so they usually have nice restaurants . Either that or find something close and convenient. Typically we don't have a lot of time. I wish I had a better answer for you. haha oh wait I just thought of one. I always like going to Indy and there is a restaurant called St. Elmos that I have been to that I enjoy. There is a handful of places that are downtown that are nice

Ive been asking the other riders this question because I think( perhaps wonder) that racing the off-season sx's in Europe is a good way to make some extra cash.

Whats your take Jake on doing the off season Euro sx's? Is it something you like to do? Can you make enough extra coin to make it worth it?
Yea I enjoy doing some of the off season races. Its always good to get a little racing in before the season starts and of course its always nice to make some cash. The only downfall is the risk of injury. You can get hurt anywhere but it would be tough in a foreign country, but I have had a good time doing them.

If you had complete control over the American MX/SX schedule, what would you change?

How heavy was the burden as an extremely young man knowing what your family had put on the line for career?

if i recall correctly i believe they basically sold or remortgaged the farm to keep up with the massive bills that come along with being a top prospect on the amateur scene.

i can't really understand what that would feel like at 15 or 16 years old.

------

Has amateur racing gotten a bit too crazy at it's current level? For most of us this sport started in the backyard on some 2 stroke with a ton of hours and minimal investment- now i see the RVs, the multiple bikes and mods- it just seems SO steep for your average blue collar family to keep up with.

Jake,

I always wondered about the maintenance you do on your bikes now with not being on a Factory Team? Do you practice on a complete stock bike and how many hours are you getting out of a motor before you rebuild? What other wear and tear parts are you replacing often. A rider at your level , I am sure is hard on a bike compared to us weekend warriors.

Is there anything you really enjoy doing outside of motocross completely?

-----------------------

Are you more upset you can't ride because of injury, or do you get upset over riding causing more injury? I think a common thought from all riders of every skill level is more along the lines of "more upset about not being able to ride due to injury." Would you agree with that ? Why or why not.

-----

Practicing is difficult, most can agree, many racers find it hard to capture race-like intensity when practicing. What do you do in practice that helps your program the best?

----

You don't have to answer all, I just wanted to rattle some things I always ponder about pros. Thanks the responses, stay positive I think this is your year for everything to fall into place!

Hey Jake,
Very simple questionSmile ..............................What would you change with professional SX and MX if it was your choice? For instance, we hear a lot of riders say the season is too long and getting longer. Your thoughts? If a rider chooses one series and not the other they are treated like.......well, I'm sure you've read some of the boards or threads. Anyways, your thoughts and what else would you like to see changed (without getting yourself into too deep of shit).
Anyways, thanks for doing this and glad you are back (almost).

Oh, yeah, one more question............being an Idaho boy and me in Montana, did you ever race in Montana and if so do you remember where? Just more curiosity than anything else.

Okay Jake,

1. You are about to be a dad (congrats). If it's a boy, what do you say when he comes to you and wants to pursue MX. Do you just encourage the kid to enjoy riding and take it as it comes or do you go full Deegan?

2. Who started typing your responses and whos doing it now? haha

Jake,
AWESOME that you are doing this, love hearing you (and Nicole) as a cohost on the Pulp show!! I witnessed the Detroit incident in person, within 50 yards. VERY hard to watch and so glad that you are doing ok, improving daily and back on the bike!!!

When you retire, do you see yourself "pulling an RV" and disapearing? Or will you somehow stay involved in the sport? Huge fan so I hope you don't disapear! Although I can't say I'd blame you, Idaho looks like a beautiful state!

Congrats to you and Nicole and becoming parents. I won't lie, its a ton of work but so worth it! Good luck in 2016 and beyond! :-)

Thank you I appreciate the kind words!
I don't know what I will do after I retire but I can tell you I love the sport and regardless if I am directly involved with the sport or not I am sure you will see me at some races.
Thanks for the question.

Thats a tough question! I don't know that there is 1 answer. As a rider, yes the season is long.We start in January and end in Aug/Sep... but not really. Monster Energy Cup in october which many get pressure to do, Straight rhythm before MEC that is growing, If you are on MXoN team. That puts you well into october. Than you have training/ boot camp to make progress you can't during racing and then you have testing, not to mention if you are switching teams you are going to have your hands even more full. When healthy the most time you are going to get off is a few weeks. That makes it tough. I don't really know how to answer your question. I do think we could use some more time off but thats what keeps us going. We have to give you guys something to gossip about hahah.

Yes I raced in Montana once in Bozeman. It was like an indoor arena cross type deal. it was freezing, good time though. 2004 I believe.

Yes I really enjoy fishing. Bass fishing and especially fly fishing.

The frustration with injury is that I am not able to ride and do what I love.. Race.

I try and simulate "racing scenarios" with short sprint laps and even trying to do motos with someone similar pace but you can't really ever fully compare practicing to racing.

Hey Jake,

Thanks for coming on here and answering some questions for all of us! I worked for a 450 rider during SX and got to know Travis and Doug pretty well. Seems like you have some good people around you. During the week in between Atlanta's, Travis was working 9-5 it seemed on your bike. His attention to detail blew my mind!

Like yourself, I am an avid fly fisherman. Trout, bass, musky, Pike, pretty much anything, all on the fly rod. What kind of gear do you use? Favorite fishing spot? Any good fishing stories?

Load your rod and reel up and bring it to Milville next year. Some of the best trout fishing you can imagine is only an hour from there.

Cheers,

Jon

Jake,

First of all, congrats on your upcoming addition to your family! My question is a little off the topic of the rest I guess but how often do you get to come back to the great state of Idaho and ride or hunt or just get time to be a normal dude and get away from all the California craziness? I remember you coming out to Kimberly and Glenns Ferry back when you rode for Geico Honda and at OMC when your rode for Pro Circuit, good times!! Anyway, good luck this season!

Damn man, you know your way around a puter, you have everyone of these other pros beat, you have an avatar
and screen shot... After you retire you can work for Vital Woohoo Silly as a Moderator and official test rider...

Good luck next year...

Hi Jake, very nice of you to do this. Thank you. Thanks GuyB for setting this up. I'd like to focus on the tracks. You can obviously answer any all or none of them. Thanks again for checking in.

What is your favorite obstacle to do on a track?

Where do you think you make up the most time on others ahead of you?

What gives you the pucker factor the most?

Do you find as a successful Pro level rider most jumps are easy or do you have to still have to psych up to do something big for the first time?

Anything you'd like to see changed or tried on a national or supercross track?

Would you ever consider going GNCC racing?

Thanks again and best of luck.

Hey Jake..

You've now (unfortunately) had to come back from injuries a few times.

How have you gotten back up to pace each time. Do you feel it has affected your speed? More so than any injuries you had as a kid?

And apart from luck, what do you think may have helped with any of your injuries?
10/3/2015 9:21am
Hi Jake, when you was at kawi did you ever get the choice to go back and test the KYB stuff like the honda guys switched too. I know Steve hates that you're back riding a kawi from the time being anyway, but how do the changes to the new bike feel for a fast guy like yourself.
