NEW '83 CR 480 gearboxes. LAST ONE

Edited Date/Time 9/28/2015 4:55am
Strangley, as I was getting the photo's together another CR480 thread was posted!!

We have just one of our NEW 1983 CR 480 gear sets left!!

These were specially manufactured for us. (We had a batch of 5 made and this is the last one!)
They fit on the original shafts with all the OEM cir-clips/washers/bushes, selector forks etc. They replace ALL 8 of the sliding gears. All the engagment dogs are reverse-under cut for a solid engagment.

Not only are CR480 gears almost impossible to get hold of, most are very badly worn with rounded engagement dogs. Honda don't put any reverse cut on there engament dogs, which makes them prone to rounding over, causing them to jump out of gear (it's so much fun when that happens on a jump take off!) and wear out the selctor forks (as once the dogs are worn the selector forks are all thats holding the bikes in gear!) Putting a reverse cut on the dogs means that the gears are actually pulled into each other under power, for a solid and positive engament!

These are manufactured to THE highest possible standards. A proper "factory" spec upgrade.

We won't be getting anymore of these made again, (at least not without a number of confirmed deposits!) so once its gone, its gone.

£995.00 plus shipping and VAT if applicable.

Stevie,
If someone were having gears made for a bike like the 480, wouldn't it make sense to have them reverse cut, or would that cause other issues? Or would the issue be not having it OEM original? Just trying to learn something here, thanks.

Matt, we went with a reverse cut on the gear set becasue it's the "correct" way to do it, from an engineering point of view. It does, however, mean that they have to be fitted as a set as they wont work with the OEM staright engagment dogs. We could of had them produced as per the OEM gears but fitting new gears in with old, even slightly worn gears, is really not good practise, as it increases the wear rate on both parts massively. So, we just went and had the set done so it's a "one hit" job.

Honda and the other Japanese manufacturers use the straight dogs because is cheaper and easier to produce them. All the OEM gears are manufactured by a sintering process which means that there is minimal final machining/finishing and vast quantities can be produced.

The gears we've had made are machined from billet, heat treated, ground etc. An old fashioned process these days but one which is ideal for small batches and produces an ultra high quality component! Thats not to say OEM gears are lower quality but obviously they are manufactured to a cost and although their ultimate life is reduced, the life span is still reasonable and comercially acceptable.

Stevie, have you heard of anyone reproducing gear sets for the 74 CR250M Honda? Between gears and shift forks, that would be on my want list.

Well.... me and pops are sitting here looking at that thinking "WTF?"... Neither of us have ever seen another aftermarket gear set for the 480, neither have we ever seen an OEM Honda gear with reverse cut.

The only thing I can think, is that a previous owner has had the OEM gears ground with a reverse cut sometime in the past.
It was not unusual during the 70's for road race engines, particularly the Yamaha TD series, to be modified in this way by "tuners" to prevent them jumping out of gear.

Newmann, Yes, one of our friends has them. He's about to have another batch made. He's getting back to me with all the info and pricing.

My 74 is in need of a freshening on the gearbox. It was all new gears, shafts and forks and had all been back cut and matched as well as second gear cut and positioned further over on the shaft for deeper engagement. Spent a small fortune back around 2000 for that but got 5 or 6 years of hard use out of it. Started slipping a bit a few years back so it has just been sitting since.

Let me know!

Newmann,

73/74 g'box. £1310 (GB pounds) plus shipping. (there would be no VAT as you're in the US)

Delivery would be 6-8 weeks. It's the complete set up, shafts and gears, plus a new spring for the selector mechanism.

If your interested drop us an E-mail

Stevie, I like the price of the 480 gear set better!Laughing

This set would give me the opportunity to freshen up my old gear set for a spare engine I have on the bench.

E-mail sent.

Went to Arncott to give the 83 project a good shake down and sort a few issues that arose at Farleigh

Awesome front brake many thanks to Denton Engineering for their superb work on the 43mm forks and twin leading shoe front brake which is very effective

Frustratingly the bike keeps jumping out of gear is this the same issue as the 480 ?

I have heard some lads do a modification with some 1984 parts but as far as I am aware this does not involve changing the gears

Any ideas before going down the gearbox route

Glad the front brake bedded itself in Mick! It's still not quite as good as a disc, but once properly bedded in they are much better than normal. It took us a long time of experimenting to get the set up sorted.

I would think that the 125 'box is suffering in the same way as many older Honda 'boxes. Rounded engagment dogs.

Which gear or gears is it jumping out of? We can get all the gears NOS apart from one (23501-KA3-710). All NOS gears aren't cheap, but it maybe cheaper than a complete newly manufactured 'box.
