Cool jump and stuff. I'm sure the kid felt like a million bucks when he landed it! Insane.

To each their own though. It looked very thought out and calculated. But I couldn't watch my kid do that. Not for any amount of money or fame.

To play the devil's advocate here: many people are saying they wouldn't let their kid jump 160', but where do we draw the line? What jump is considered safe in MX? Our sport isn't safe, period. Something can go wrong at any time. But, we let kids ride when they can walk.

Some parents let there kids ride when they can walk. Others wait until they have mastered a bicycle before putting them on a dirt bike.

Don't be daft, you still need them to pull it off.

Are you saying you did everything at that age because you knew no better? Exactly.
I believe his point is that at 9 years old the kid can't fully comprehend what it means to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. At that age they might know something bad might happen, but don't truly understand the consequences. Unless you really understand the possible outcomes, it's not really ballsy, it's just a kid doing something he thinks is fun.

One might say it would have to be a mentally challenged devil's advocate to think a 165 foot jump is comparable to racing MX. Both dangerous yes but the 165 foot jump is unnecessary and that is the politest word I can think of.

Seriously are there teams out there just looking for the next big "jumper?"

It was as safe as you can get. It's far more dangerous trying to race on a race track where these kids need to rail outside of a corner, pin it wide open 3rd or 4th gear and then just barely clear a double or something that requires a very calculated landing. There was no timing needed on the riders part for this jump. There are jumps at your local track far more dangerous. I've seen state fair sx tracks more dangerous. Yes, it was a long jump, but not a ton about it was extremely dangerous. The landing was huge and gradual. It allowed for lots and lots of error. A race track with double, step ups, jump on jump offs, etc that requires far more real-time calculation is a lot more dangerous.

I have no problem with this kid jumping this but to suggest it isn't more dangerous than being in a race, no way I can agree with that.
This is a BIG jump, bike seize or flat landing which he was pretty close to doing could be bad!

Watched it again, maybe he wasn't that close to flat landing it

Using Vital as a barometer, it appears 80% of the MX community believes this stunt was a bad idea, which roughly interpolates into 99% of the general public. Ramp + motorcycle + GoPro + 9 year old = a potential call from Child Protective Services.

It's a publicity stunt, nothing more. No YouTube, no jump. And very few people would ever classify that jump as "safe". It's a circus trick, devised by adults, and performed by a child. The margin for error is slim, and the potential consequences catastrophic. If the worst were to happen, his parents would have charges filed against them, just as parents are charged when children find unsecured firearms.

Sounds to me like you are discussing a SX track correct? Surely a MX track wouldn't have these SX obstacles. I have raced at both Mammoth, Carlsbad and the REM track at Glen Helen which represent MX racing to me. I didn't encounter any man made double, step ups, jump on jump offs etc but if I did I would race SX or go to "too many" outdoor tracks today in the US.

There was a lot of room for error. The only thing I would be worried about is bike malfunction.

The bigger the jump does not always mean it's increasingly more dangerous. There are a lot of variables...

This circuis jump had as many variables eliminated as possible so therefore it was not as dangerous as it seems.

Anyone remember the Carmichael double at Ponca? Before they tamed it down??

That was a gnarly jump for big bikes let alone mini riders.

It was right out of a corner, blind takeoff/landing, very steep take off, huge jump, even curved a bit and had an absolutely unforgiving landing..... now that was a dangerous jump!! It was awesome when you could land it!! Painful if you came up short...

We all don't get to race at Mammoth, Glen Helen etc. (Mammoth is an awesome track and very safe I agree. My favorite track of all time.)

I raced plenty of So Cal and Nor Cal tracks in the 90's doing the CMMC series I believe it was called. Places like Sunrise, Pamona, etc had plenty of sketchy jumps.

There are plenty of Texas Tracks including Lake Whitney, Swann, etc that have some big jumps. And they are generally pretty safe unless you make a mistake or have a mechanical and then you can have a massive crash.

I crashed over the finish line jump at lake Whitney back in around 1993. It was not a very big or challenging jump. Pretty high speed I suppose. My bike bogged right on the take off and I went over the bars and blowed into the ground and bike plowed right into me. Was air lifted to local hospital. One of my gnarliest crashes ever.

Like I said, the circus jump above has as many variables eliminated as possible. I'm not at all saying it wasn't dangerous. Obviously it is. I'm just saying the chance is lower or as low as some of the stuff kids are doing on local tracks today.

To each their own...

TXDirt, hundreds of kids live up every weekend to race, yet only one has a video on YouTube clearing 165' on a 65. Is that because the jump is as safe as riding MX? Perhaps it's because of the exact opposite.

Yes, racing is dangerous, and kids get hurt. But the consequences of making a mistake while trying to clear a 150' gap are exponentially higher. Only a person with very narrow field of view could support the parents' decision to build a freestyle ramp and send their son sailing. It's all or nothing, and a mechanical, endo, or last-second abort are all possible. It's just not worth putting your child's life on the line.

I don't think a lot of parents have the resources or lack of brain cells to build a 150 foot gap with ginormous error free landing ramp either. We also know a lot of kids get hurt racing every year. How many again get hurt hucking it over 150 gap with over sized landing ramp? What's that number? Close to none or none?

Yes, I think the parents are stupid. No I would not let my kids do it. I also won't let my kids race because of the dangers even though I myself raced for the better part of 15 years.

Seeing many of you hyperventilate over this video is ridiculous just the same.

Apologies, I still have a 40+ page contract to red line and a forecast/budget to prepare, then present, before I leave the office. You're right though, let me drop everything and get straight to how stupid you are...

Ah, I changed my mind. Build your kid a big ass ramp and top this 9 yr olds high score

I want to know which parents jumped it as well because if you or any other adult on the scene can't do it don't let your child.
He did it. It was huge. It's on video. Now put it back to 65' and enjoy a life of riding your bike. There will be plenty of other near death experiences along the way I promise. Enjoy

What they did at one point was move the landing further out so it was more difficult to do. Thus less riders even attempted it. Tamed down was incorrect choice of words.

The finish line jump at Ponca where Jason Partridge broke his back wasn't near as dangerous as the Carmichael double but they tamed that one down a bit in the coming years. It was unessential sketchy for an amateur event at the time.

At 9 yrs old I was jumping bicycles over big gaps. No doubt today I'd be doing that if the equipment was available at that age.

I saw a record in the Guinness book for bicycle jumping over barrels,I think it was 8 or 10. We had 5 or 6 in the barn so I got them out, laid a 2x12 on the first one and a nearly full sheet of plywood on the last braced up for landing.

After clearing them I left one with the take off ramp and started shifting the rest a barrel width till up in the mid teens, like 15 or 16 barrels.

I was using a 26 inch bike, like a beach cruzer because the 20 inch stuff was banana seats and ape hangers. On the next to last jump the steering was tight and I had no idea why, went up on the hill to hit it again and when I left the ramp the steering stem dropped right out the head ,lol.

Man,I augered in,peeled the hide off my face and chest.

Good times
