Maybe there should not be a national minimum wage. Different areas have different cost of livings. A "living" wage in NYC, DC, LA is way different than a "living" wage in Boise, Kansas City, Detroit.

Maybe a localized minimum wage is more appropriate.

What? What?

Asking (mandating) able-bodied people to give something back for their benefits? That is outrageous!

Some good-natured folks will be along shortly to educate us on how horrible this policy is and why the good people of Maine are downright mean for supporting it.

Neighboring states with liberal policies should brace for some new residents showing up for a better deal.

I thought one of the arguments FOR increasing the minimum wage was that the tax payers are subsidizing these companies low salaries (because all their minimum wage employees are still collecting welfare)...so you're saying that the welfare system needs to be overhauled so that all the minimum wage workers will still qualify for welfare? That defeats one of the main points of increasing the minimum wage.

Good grief...

Minimum wage jobs aren't meant to be living wage jobs...never have been, never will be. They are jobs to get ones foot in the door, to start getting experience, to build a resume, to support while working on education etc. The minimum wage isn't set to be the minimum amount that one can live. Its there as a minimum amount one might earn, until they can improve themselves to justify a larger wage.

In fact, you talk about how subjective what a job is worth is...well, living wage is also very subjective. One persons living wage, is another persons poverty. Really. And if the government is going to start pushing a "living wage" rather than a "minimum wage"...then the government is going to have to define exactly what a "living wage" actually is. And the problem is, is that its not the governments job to tell employers what their jobs are worth. That is up to what the local economy will justify. When jobs are scarce, its a higher wage...when jobs are plentiful its a lower wage. If an employer gets sick of crappy workers, then he'll pay more to get better qualified employees. The government doesn't need to be involved in this beyond making sure that companies aren't exploiting their workers (and working for even the current minimum wage isn't exploitation).

Minimum wage jobs aren't meant to be living wage jobs...never have been, never will be.

F.D.R said the following, “By living wages, I mean more than a bare subsistence level — I mean the wages of a decent living.” (1933, Statement on National Industrial Recovery Act)

It seems he probably knows more about it than you do, don't you think? That was a rhetorical question because I've no doubt you will still try and dispute it but that's beside the point here.

Of course Welfare needs reform to keep up with current economics, and that includes extending benefits when minimum wage increases. If costs of living expenses go up, and if minimum wage increases, then the cap on benefits needs to be adjusted accordingly or else a minimum wage increase will not be effective since the pay to cost ratio will have changed.

Probably because the best way to fully implement it borders a little bit too close to "New Deal Socialism" for most people who get their opinions from talk radio and Faux News.........!

In all seriousness, it may be time to look at implementing another Public Works Administration type of deal. It's hard to imagine how different our infrastructure would be in this country if it hadn't occurred. Our own area would be mostly a desert wasteland if not for the WPA projects like Grand Coulee Dam and it's progression that turned so much of our area into fertile farm ground with relatively cheap power to go along with it. Decent paying, living wage jobs that eliminate the need for adults to seek fast food jobs to support their families would be amazing, but it would go against the ideology of so many that they wouldn't even begin to look at how beneficial it has been in our history.

I don't know about faux news or talk radio but the situation now doesn't compare to the 30's when the unemployment rate was over 20%. Out of that 20%, a good majority of them would take any kind of work and were happy to get it and would work their asses off. Given the demo that the article described, I really don't want those losers taking the job of somebody who really wants to work. The ratio is 12000 to 2500. If there is some legitimate public works projects that needs to be done then take the 25% who are willing to work and then give the rest of them their can of beans or whatever satisfies them. The last thing we need is to push a bunch of losers out there that takes 4 of them to do the work of one good man. I have known people like that. If you make poverty comfortable enough, their good. I'm down with keeping them out of the way. It's cheaper.

This has already been proved to be incorrect, there will not be increases that large.
How can this have been "proven incorrect" without the policy in place yet? Maybe it has been claimed to be incorrect but let's be realistic. Wages go up. Bussiness's costs go up. Prices go up.

McDonalds has a good portion of their food pre cooked and flash frozen. All they have to do is warm the shit up these days and they can't even do that properly. I have bitten into frozen breakfast burrito's and cold pancakes too many times to think people working there deserve or even want to work for $15.00 an hour. It's a far cry from when my wife worked there in high school back in the early 80's.

Now Chik Fil A....those people know how to run a business. I have no idea where they find all those pleasant smiling employees.

I thought it was just our local franchise that had the smiling, friendly workers. It's good to know that maybe it's company wide. Sure is refreshing to be met with happy, competent workers vs. the fucking incompetent, retarded hobos that you find at most Ronnie Macs.
