I have wondered if pro surfers ever get attacked by sharks, considering so many are from South Africa and Australia and spend comparitavely way more time in the water, looking like seals, than almost anybody. Considering Mick Fanning is a 2 time world champ(I think), I guess I have my answer. Honestly I can't believe this doesn't happen more often to these guys. There have been an absolute shit ton of shark attacks this year.

When I was living in Australia we took a surf trip up the Gold Coast. The first day out I got bumped by a shark and it scared the shit out of me. Spent nearly all of the rest of the trip hanging out on the beach drinking Little Creatures.

I was watching live and it was so full on and yeah when he went behind that wave I was fearing the worst when we saw him again.. A local dude (Ballina) got bitten just the other week it's scary shit!! I surfed for like 10 years up until my accident and never really saw any sharks, when you think about how many people are in the ocean at all times shark attacks are pretty rare..
didn't stop me thinking about them though haha

I grew up at Balnarring Beach on the Western Port bay. It's right across from Seals Rock on Phillip Island. That's where Vic Hislop caught the World record. I don't surf but I used to do a lot of Scuba diving.

Not long after this one was caught, My Mums friend pulled in a 19ft pointer off the Balnarring beach with a surf rod. I shit you not!.

That happened in Jefferies Bay (South Africa) home of one of the best waves in the world. Cape Town and False Bay are a haven for the Great White sharks who patrol the water hunting seals. When I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast I quit surfing for exactly that above reason. I cant think of a worse way to go that being ripped up by a six foot great white....and they get waaaay bigger than that.

Im surprised that for competition like this they dont use some sort of high powered fish shocking using the boats as the surfers go out. or if anything just haul them out there on that boat and when they see a wave they want quick jump off quick and go! to easy ?

But crazy to see on live international TV, was watching the bloke in real life earlier this year. Scary stuff seeing stuff like this happen to big names or anyone for that matter! Unsure

Apparently they had "Shark Zappers" on their leg ropes. Don't quote me, but I think Fanning may've as well. Might also explain why it went for his leg rope and also the strange angle of attack.

I don't think Fanning had one on, I know that Slater was saying the guys that went back out had them, and they tried to make him go with them! He said no thanks.

I've only ever seen one shark in the lineup, I went on my first surf trip alone when I was 18 to Costa Rica and a bullshark cruised through the lineup, the locals didn't seem bothered, I was straight out of there! Can't even imagine how scary it was to be Fanning, just a sighting was freaky enough for myself.
