It's dated July 13, so it could be related to this guy. If she was injured at the track through no fault of her own (article says rider hit bleachers), shouldn't the track's insurance cover hospital costs?

Yea I read it, It's additional money for rehab. Bummer deal. All the best to your grandma man!
I have to say I'm a little confused about why there is a need for donations.

I might suggest being specific with how you plan to use the money. If the track is covering medical costs, then explain why $28,000 and how it will be used.
If you're going to ask people to donate, tell then why.
Your story was compelling and sad and my best to your family. Hope she gets better.
The person that gets treated at the Hospital is WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BILLING. Period.
Insurance Companies take their sweet-assed time paying for this kid of shit...playing the liability game...reassigning blame...& all that shit.
Meanwhile, the person who went to the Hospital gets all the bills. All the stress. All the worry.
As for scams & what not? In a community the size of ours, we should be able to validate that this is the woman that was hurt...anyone know these folks?
But to ask for money to buy her a laptop..... No thanks.
Hope your mom gets a full and speedy recovery though.
Quick question, why would a track allow a spectator to enter the track and be inside a flagger hut? This is a huge liability and now they see why.
I feel for the OP's family member. But $28,000?!? Where'd that number even come from? And what exactly is it going to be used for? $28,000 buys a hell of a laptop. That's not asking for a small cash reserve (which hopefully she has some cash reserve already). The track is really the ones who should be trying to cover expenses...but even so, you wonder what she was doing out of the spectator area. Hope she gets well soon.
Shane
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the OP's mom.

Don't let the door slam you in the ass on the way out.
You don't want any money? Yeah, right. We all have our hard luck stories, we don't all use it as an opportunity to raise cash though. Human nature I suppose. There's many better ways to raise awareness.
Nah, I'm gonna have to call BS!
Shame on us ya reckon. Nah. Shame on you mate.
Like I said, I hope she gets well soon, but like mxknowitall said, try selling your bike first.
"O wait you don't come on this board on a regular bases and beat off to all the shit talking, fuck no I'm not giving you any money in your time of need"
The story seems valid enough.
With your guys thought process I assume you never help out the guy on the corner because you assume he is going to buy booze with it....who gives a shit what he does with it. Do it to be a good person and hope the money is going to good use.
You don't have to donate, but talking shit and voicing your objections is pretty pathetic.
Off The GoFundMe website:
Am I responsible for taxes? (US Only)
While this is by no means a guarantee, donations on GoFundMe are usually considered to be "personal gifts" which are not taxed as income in the US. We're unable to provide specific tax advice since everyone's situation is different so we always recommend checking with a tax professional to be sure.
Additionally, WePay will not report the funds you collect as earned income. It is up to you (and a tax professional) to determine whether your proceeds represent taxable income. The person who's listed on the WePay account and ultimately receives the funds may be responsible for taxes.
If you collect at least $20,000 and over 200 donations in the calendar year, WePay will send you a 1099-K form by January 31st of the following year. The 1099-K form is simply intended to track the movement of funds.
I'd be checking with my tax professional before asking for free money on GoFundMe.
In the next breath he claimed he didn't want a dime. But wants to get her a LapTop. That'd require cash wouldn't it?
Is that how you'd choose to raise awareness? I'm awear that It's all a bit Ironic.
Might be worth a look.
Best wishes to your mom and I hope she gets well soon.
