So you're saying if Stewart was still racing the 125 series, it would be ok for you. Or if Michael Schumacher would still be riding go-karts instead of F1, it would also be ok. Or Michael Jordan, instead of going to the NBA, he would go to an Asian basketball series because "it's easier to win there than at the top level" and it's still a "pro rank"?

I love how deep some fanboys are blinded by their love / passion / what ever. It's just ridiculous and like I said it before, if you really think he will race another 10 years professionally, then you're really naive.

Our sport is already f*cked up in the way that our top riders don't ride the same series. And now you have a guy who won't even ride in the same class of the same series. Go figure Dry
Nonsense, your comparisons are foolish. Herlings is not dropping down to some amateur series, he is racing the GPs so it's not like playing in the NBA and dropping down to some other series. You should know this.

Herlings is racing in the GPs with other professionals. You can't sandbag the pro class, either you are a pro or not, there is no dropping down. Cairoli is no more of a pro than Herlings is, there is no title that says "This fucker is a super pro, he is a pro plus and goes well beyond pro."

I have no problems with riders making careers out of classes. K-Dub tried a few races in the MX2 class at the nationals a few years back and got his ass whooped by the young guns. Jeff Ward was in the 125 class from 1978-1984 and he's a damn hero. Johnny O was in there a bit as well and Barnett was a 125 specialist! These guys are legends so I don't want to hear crap about Herlings in the MX2 class; he has plenty of time to move to the MX1 class.

There is no convincing some people.

Across the moto world there are waves about the inherent danger of the big class and we have a few small minded ignorant biggots calling out pro riders to step up sooner or risk being called tossers.

How about we start cutting people's careers down in length because we want them to prove themselves in the biggest badass class out there? Is it not enough we have riders getting seriously hurt in lower classes? Have you seen how JH 2015 season has gone? So he enters after a broken femur, gets hurt, comes back, gets hurt........

I see that this sandbagger doesn't have to try to win races, so much so that he's been the hospital several times this season already and spent half of last year doing nothing.

You absolute dickheads, how can you call yourself genuine moto fans?

I can't be arsed to try and explain just how small minded some opinions are, there is literally no point and no victory here. I'm literally out of this thread it's beyond pointless.

Kind of seems like sandbagging when you can DNF or DNS so many races and STILL have the points lead. Or break your femur mid-season and still have a shot at the title. However 2015 ends up for him, Herlings needs to put on his big boy pants and race the Elite class in 2016.

I think the analogy of Stewart racing in the 125 class is quite correct.

Would some have called out Stewart for being a sandbagger if he destroyed the field year after year and then announced he was going for another year in the class?

None of this holds water.

"Herlings is racing in the GPs with other professionals."

Yes, but in an age limited support class (MX2), its purpose as designed by Youthstream is to feed riders into their premier class - MX1. He has been racing in this class for six years so he has a huge experience advantage over his competitors. By his own words he is dodging the intent of the class by staying down in it to win races easier, that is the textbook definition of Sandbagging. Not any different than if he was a local B rider staying down in the C class. Actually it’s worse because he has almost swept his series and even on "bad" years has 100-150 point leads. Again, it’s a support class in which many of his main competitors are forced or whiling move up to MX1/move to the U.S.

Others have stated he has actually hurt his career by staying down and I agree. If he had moved up after winning two titles he would probably be calmer, faster and settled in MX1. Instead he is getting hurt trying to “Dominate” MX2 like his prime years in the class. Not to forget getting beaten routinely now. Thats not a good thing.

Did you even bother to read the interview? Where did Herlings say that he was staying down to "win races easier"? Herlings in fact said that at this point, if asked, he would say he is racing the MX2 class, but that it could change. He also said the complete opposite of what you are saying he said in other parts of the interview.

By definition a pro can't sandbag so your analogy is bogus. It's nothing like a B rider moving down to the C class since Herlings has not moved down any class. His experience cannot count against him unless you wish to move that line of logic to ALL the racers. Was Stewart sandbagging when he was smoking the 125 class against the rookies? Was Jeff Ward sandbagging when he won the 125 title in 1984 after being in it since 1978?

Herlings has broken no rules and just like all the other guys out there is a pro. No sandbagging in the pro class, your arguments are rubbish.
