I typically promote a local faircross race here...in Mountain Home, Arkansas. BUT, we didn't have the "5th annual" Mountain Home Faircross this year. The current president of the group that runs the arena was a total tool. After learning about the race not happening a local doctor contacted me to find out the details. He asked if his son could write a letter to the editor about it. I was going to stay out of it, until the editor of our paper said that the president said that I never contacted them... here are the letters...

I would think indoor horse/rodeo venues would be plentiful in a state like Arkansas...

We don't even have an "indoor" arena. This is an outdoor rodeo arena. They are pissed because their rodeo's have 300 - 500 people and I came in and put on a motorcycle race that filled the stands.

We'll show him what being "rowdy" is all about. Wink

The funny thing, is that he lied to the editor of the local news paper...the only news paper and he (rowdy) is a business owner. I called him out on it a little bit more in my letter, but the editor edited it.

Yeah, no kidding.

Plus, I'm considered an outsider, since I was born in Indiana and moved here when I was 4...I'm still called a "yankee" by many of the rodeo types.

That letter ran in our Saturday's paper...i've had SEVERAL calls already from people saying that they're not happy. One was from a motel owner that said he was going to call the mayor and talk to him about it!!!

Hell, I could see if I was making big money. Luckily we own the dozer, tractor, and skid steer. We took very good care of the guys that helped us. All that does is help the local business. There is a gas station/country store right next to the arena. The lady said that is her busiest night by DOUBLE for the year.

Those dumb asses will be begging for your race next year. Make them pay.

He was playing poker with you on the price. He obviously thought you were making a ton of cash on the deal.

Did he raise the prices for the horse event? I'd try and find that out.

He told me that it's $2.00 per person for everybody that comes to a "non-equine" event and $1.00 per person for everybody that comes to an equine event.

He was pissed last year when he found out that I had some "dealers" there and that I charged them to set up their booths. He told somebody at the race last year..."I ought to tell those vendors to pack their shit and get out of here". I asked him why he was messing with my "sponsors" and he said that I shouldn't be allowed to charge them. I told him, when I rent the arena, it's not really any of his business who I charge...or how much I charge them.

He's the typical cowboy dickhead. He's about 5'5" and thinks he's a bad ass.

Like I said...I brought in 2,300 -2,500 people last year. Their biggest event between rodeo and truck pulls had MAYBE 500 people.

S.M.C. and a cowboy, not a good mix.

I did contact the CC. They told me that it's the "Saddle Club's" arena and they can't really do anything. But they appreciate me bringing in people from out of town.

I told Rowdy that for less than 1/4 of that, I could rent an enclosed arena in Little Rock (Barton Coliseum). He said..."you should have it there then".

Usually I'm a smart ass...but I was very "business like" when I talked to him. He was a total prick.

Huck, I attended the event last year I couldn't race due to a broken wrist but I made it up to check out some of the racing anyway. I was really surprised at the attendance the stands were packed. I was at Mike's last weekend and asked him why he wasn't having it this year and explained the situation exactly as you stated. Stinks they won't be having it this year I was looking forward to it. Maybe next year....

Who's this bitch?

"Its not about greed for all of you that have a HALF INFORMED opinion. If David really want to be commended for bringing this event to the area, then lets get the Saddle Club's members TRUE information for the flip side of the coin. Besides all of the drama, lets be honest, the arena DOES belong to the Saddle Club. It is a private club with by-laws, protocol and comittees that VOTE on the events. And regarding the last blog about giving freely - all the motorcross people know who gave and who took. Let's stop with the self-serving pity and making someone a martyr."

I was wondering what happen to the event. I have raced it the last two years and would have this year too. The purse was good and you could go fishing the next day on arguably the best trout fishing rivers in the country. Hope it works out next year. I'll shoot an email to the editor.

Thanks Ben.

I've always had fun with it...unfortunately it didn't work this year. I'm hopeful that next year there will be a change of power that owns the arena.

BTW...keep that trout fishing stuff quiet...I don't want all these yahoos on here finding out about this place.

hey david,

i read the baxter blog. some people like to shoot their mouth off about things they know nothing about don't they?

look at what this guy is doing--------

$40 membership fee to race?????? plus your entry. sounds like rowdy runs that arena too. we would get strung up for trying something like that around here. but we could cover the saddle club fees. i looked at the results from last year. out of 136 entries, there were 48 entries from mountain home.

I have to say $400 bucks sounds like one heck of a deal, those guys have to have ins. even though you do too, but it sounds like you were willing to pay more for rent so no big deal there.

The thing I don't understand is how a club who draws less than you do to an event can still operate a facility. If you have a great draw why not set up your own facility.

Well good luck with it in the future.
