Amateur does mean you arent getting paid, which is a great thing for olympic and stick & ball sports.

However... It would be great for moto if the top 3 (or 5 or whatever) could make back their entry fees, regardless of class. It is a nice little extra motivation to show up and race weekly instead of doing something else. Yes, moto tracks are having a hard enough time keeping the gates open, but if giving payback to the 250 c class increased weekly entries, it could end up making the promoters money....
Your first sentence..........LOLZ.

I think they spent more than a few $$$$ sponsoring racing teams here in the USA.

Nascar champion or not, he didn't even make half the money Lewis did last year.

If you look at what the top 1000 Poker Players in the World get paid you wouldn't believe it! It's insane! Motocross should be the highest paid sport there is in my opinion but I probably won't be alive when that happens!

I full agree that our top guys in this sport need to be taken care of better on their paychecks. No argument there..

But, to say "get over it" or one of these other stupid ass comments only shows some of you have no intelligent thoughts in your head that you cannot even give a reasonable opinion...

I do wonder who it is in each sport that decides it is okay to pay out purse money to this sports amateurs but here in this other sport, we need to make it so they are not allowed to get paid without penalty.

One other thing to consider is the difference in tracks. Dirt tracks take a lot of money to prep: many of the places around here are karting courses set up in parking lots. So you might need to sweep it but that's it. There's no water, water trucks, dozers, skimming, dirt/saw dust, flaggers, etc. Obviously there is some of this stuff but many of the events that I've seen use participants for course work. That, and potentially less for insurance, can really cut down on how much it costs to run a track. You don't even have to buy the land if you're using a parking lot. It's just there is someone will take the liability.

I think a little bit of what everyone else has already said in here also rings true. The only part that I don't buy is that you can "pay for your racing" this way. Maybe gas and a few top ends but that doesn't cover the $30-40K outlay of expenses to get a decent kart, tires, race gas, trailer, stands, etc. I raced quarter midgets and there were families that sunk hundreds of thousands into their motorhomes, trailer, backup cars, tires, backup motors, etc. I know a kid around here that races karts and has a team that drove their rig to Vegas for the nationals. You're going to drop big coin if you're going to race with the fast guys and it's more necessary there then on two wheels where talent can bridge the gap.
Yes, I can see where this makes easier for the promoter to be able to fork out a little more cash then a MX promoter. They only use one flagger in Karts vs 30 in MX.

Pretty sure another reason it's easier to pay money in karting is there are no skill classifications. It's based on displacement age and weight. They just pay out a percentage of the entry fee's. They can do that because it's a lot tougher to sandbag your way to the money unlike MX where sandbagging is the norm.

$10,000 KTM probably costs $4,000 if that to make.
It might help if we had scramble type courses (would be relatively easy to add one at GH) to get people with dual sport bikes and older MX bikes that are collecting dust back out there turning laps. People could get a taste of competition while raising their riding skills and then hopefully make the transition to racing MX.

The trend of smaller classes except at the Vet and Senior levels is not a good sign. Even though I harp on safety issues the fact that kids don't play outside anymore (can't get them off their PCs and Smartphones) is a big problem. It is another sign of the times that the military had to lower their physical conditioning requirements for new recruits because of how inactive today's youths are.

Nice to see you posting again WORCSRacer! How the heck ya been?

Great point about sandbagging. Every year at Mammoth this is a big problem....guess these guys didn't get enough trophies when they were younger so they drop down a class or two particularly at big races.

Hey Rock.

ya what does it say about your classification system when the riders from your "intermediate" classes are faster than your Pro class and get signed to contracts and the novice riders race Intermediate and expert at their home tracks.

I hear you. Sandbaggers remind me of my last (as in LAST) boss back when I was still in the corporate world told me during a team building exercise "it's okay to cheat to win."

It wasn't any surprise we didn't get along.
