I know there have many threads on this topic in the past. In this case, I am asking for some input from people that have repaired their case with epoxy successfully.
I know a new cover can be bought and haven't decided against that option but if it can be fixed I will spend the $200 I saved on something else.
I have done this repair on my 1982 CR250 and it worked well. On this 1989, I am not worried about the impeller area as I see no real problem fixing that. My concern is the area where the seals go. The bore seems good enough but where the seals seat against that small flange in the opening is pretty corroded away.
So the question is, is that a real critical area or is it just to locate the seals and even that smaller lip won't pose any issues.

I would add that the JB Weld on my 83 came loose and made a sludge, lodged under the impeller, seized it, no coolant moving - motor blew 40 minutes into a GP in Athens. I paid the price($250) and got an 81 aluminum cover and haven't looked back.
I noticed Partzilla has the 89 cover for $167... if it was me grab that and run Evans Coolant - you will never have a problem.
Also - I don't think we've met but I'm thinking I will see you in Athens.....I will be spectating. Looking forward to it.
I've heard that's the hot setup!
Finally arrived today. On first inspection, it looks really cobby. The surface inside and out is rough enough that the mold was either hastily built or is pretty worn out. All the machined and tapped areas look nice enough though. I guess I will just tell people it is a sand-cast "works" part from Honda.
Figured I would post some pictures for those that may be considering fix or replace.
Impeller area - New -vs- Old
This thing is "Ruff" enough, it should bark
Is that 600 or 800? LOL Compare the 600 cm3 with the old cover in the impeller pic above.
Finally, the inside was pretty rough as well. Also has some shiny finish applied to it for what reason I have no clue. Mold release agent?
One other note is that the water connections are screwed in on the Alu cover whereas they were cast into the Mag cover and rotted just the same.
$166.54 + S&H to my door. I would say it's a wise investment.
