I still disagree with his point on bikes being better/safer now. Sure 4-strokes in general are easier to ride and track well but there is no need for a 450 or any bike motor that big in racing. When you wreck, pick up your bike, hit the gas and still clear a triple in front of you it becomes stupid.

I think that he may be saying that the bike itself is safer. By that I mean that they handle better, have better suspension and don't get carb flat spots on jump faces. I think that may be confused with it being safer in the grand scheme of things. All of those benefits and the confidence that they inspire bring higher speed, bigger jumps and thus larger crashes. It wasn't that long ago that the triples were hard for the lights class (then 125). Now, it seems like the guys can just cut the inside and seat bounce them at will. This is just my 2 cents. I doubt that there is any solution that will make any difference or make everyone happy.
Ya, well said.

Its not the bikes, its not the tracks, its the sport. Plain and simple. Everyone is so quick to point blame in this day and age, instead of accepting the fact of what something is.

At pro level I agree because they should be capable of determine what is going to work and what not.

At amateur level its most likely the track design.
When I did racing as an Amateur I although was responsible for the track design.
Back than I was end of the 20's and I have to admit I designed some jumps where I would say today stupid.
No doubles or triples but huge tables with a monster ramp.

But due to the fact we had although riders in the 50's and really fast once we fixed those during test rides.
It is not rocket science to make jumps more secure you cant make them safe but more secure!

Lets take Monster Mountain in AL, I like the track you can do huge jumps but they are not dangerous.
If you miss it correctly it might heart a bit by bottoming the suspension but that's it.
that's what I would call MX track but unfortunately most tracks are a MSX Track More SX than MX.

If you are why to fast on a jump no track designer can anything do against it. But there is that thing called throttle it is not an on or off switch. To me it seems some people don't know how many leave there brain at home when they go riding.
If you are to slow on jumps and it is a table instead of a double nobody gets hurt!

We cant make our sport free of injuries but we can reduce the risk to get injured.

Some might say if you cant jump a double roll them, fine but saw to many tracks where that is not possible.
Most of the time I see a vertical cut off with a 5-8feet drop, that is so useless in my opinion.
The crazy part is even at SX races you don't see something stupid like this.

But I guess this is a useless discussion as long as people want to act like Dungey, Reed and other Pros on the track.

My advice start your own way of riding dont copy somebody and you get away with less injuries. (Not without)

And anyone would listen to this guy on a safety issue?
Just in case you can't find Chad in this picture it's because instead of being in control of his bike he decided to tight rope the finish line banner

Chad has zero credibility on safety issues. Look at what he chooses not to wear while out racing and it pretty much sums up his credibility.

Hey Reed bashers, take note: Reed did not win or make the podium but did like the track and blamed his poor performance on himself. Hmm.
Be sure to erase this fact from your database.Wink

I think this is a perfect description of the risks you have to take and how you have to lay it all on the line, consequences be damned, to be successful at the top level of this sport. If safety is a top driver for you, you will either not be on top, or won't be able to compete at all. Kdub is one of the most talented to ever do it, what's his win record? What is reeds win record? What's his injury record? I rest my case.

Ahhhh gotchya, SUPER STRONG ARGUMENT you got their budd-y.

So by this rule, these riders are uncreddible.
Sir Chad Reed
James "Bubba" Stewart
RYAN DUNGEY
Jake Wiemer (Assuming you are saying Trey is safe for wearing a Neck Brace where Wiemer no longer does)
Weston Peik
Nick Wey
Eli Tomac

Strong, STRONG ARGUMENT sir.

So I guess we should listen to
Trey Canard & Justin Barcia because they wear neck braces?

My opinion is that anyone without a neck brace and chest/back protection is an idiot. Anyone that would send their child out on a track without all the safety equipment available on that child is a careless parent. My opinion certainly is not going to change anytime soon, even if a fast rider says differently. Because everyone knows that we should suck up and agree with anyone that can turn a fast laptime on a bike. When riders like Reed who have thousands of followers starts spouting his ignorant thoughts on rider protection on the internet then to me he is causing a lot of harm in regards to the welfare of young riders.

Now please understand that is just MY opinion. Not saying it is right or wrong and by all means you are entitled to your own opinion. Regardless of how wrong it might be Smile

I disagree. I would say Trey is pretty close to the top (he won a race this year) and he takes all the proper precautions for safety gear (knee braces, chest protector, and Leatt). What else can he wear? I am not aware of any of the other "Top" guys that wear a neck brace and chest protector though.

Canard still gets hurt more than anyone else (it seems) so maybe he is doing something wrong.

My comment had nothing to do with safety gear. Its about a racers choices on the track. Pinning it or not. I personally think besides boots helmet and goggles it matters very little what you have on in motocross. None of us are ever more than a bad call away from a helicopter ride. My point is to win you have to risk it. Reed has risked a lot and won a lot. Kdub has risked a little less and won a little (a lot) less. Trey has crashed out of more seasons than he's completed. He's also very successful. Its a go for broke or lose sport!

Not at all. KW is known even among the greatest as one of the greatest. I'm a huge fan. I'm saying his lack of championships or anyone's for that matter have less to do with talent and skill and more to do with doing huge dangerous stuff out of shape and such.

Go read DV's latest blog and his advice to this years SX amateurs and how if they want to be true stars they need to take more risk and take their knocks.

Personally I think both riders make good points, the way I see it is that there are some comments that the 450's are too big and powerful and too easy to go fast on....but IF 4 strokes hadnt come into play (thanks Yamaha!) then the 2 strokes now would of probably been just as fast given they would of had another 7-8 years of development to this point....albeit perhaps not as 'easy' to ride as the 4 strokes.

If Chad moved over and changed his line and got landed on by someone jumping the quad into the corner that he wasn't jumping I have a feeling his opinion would be different.

If he had a good finish he usually has the tough guy mentality, if he didn't there's a good chance he'll tell you what needs to change.

Windham is about as intelligent and classy as they come so for Chad to have a go at Kevin on social media is typical Chad Reed.

Actually. I mostly disagree with Reed. JS7's comments made a lot more sense to me.

Anyway. I think the real Issue is with local tracks and riders more so than the at the top Pro level.

Seems like he had a completely different opinion a couple of years ago. Where was it? St Louis? Or Indy? One of the east coast tracks that he went off to the effect that "someone is going to have to get killed before they listen".

Reed is spot on. And it's really amusing to see the haters try to discount Chad Reed's knowledge. He has won championships, come from a modest background to huge success, has a multimillion dollar race team now. Also because he has raced GPs and traveled the world, that gives him a better perspective on what is really going on.
