For those of you still saying that the fastest rider is the one with the best lap time...

If I race a marathon and take off like a bat out of hell and run the first mile in 5:30....everybody else paces themselves for the whole 26 miles...so around mile 3 they all pass me and finish ahead of me, never running a 5:30 mile....does that mean that I can say I was the fastest runner there?

Not picking on you, Huck, you just gave a good example for me to use.

You guys need to first come to a consensus on what "fastest" means. Because the way I see it, Huck was the fastest marathon runner relative to top-speed, but not relative to average speed.

Some people don't grasp the concept of relativity, and more importantly, definition. You need to define what "fastest" means before you start arguing. Fastest speed? Fastest acceleration? Fastest rear-wheel rpms? Fastest time?

It's like arguing what the "fastest" car is. If you take a Ferrari (that does roughly, 220mph) and put it next to Ken Block's Ford rally car (0-60 in under 2 seconds), you'd have a hard time convincing someone that the Ford would be faster, until you tell them that the race is only 100 feet long down a gravel road. Yes, that Ferrari will do 220 mph, but not in 100 feet on dirt. It's all relative. Likewise, take that Ford rally car and put it up against the Ferrari at Indy, the Ford is probably gonna lose.

Who cares what's revealed? Speed is something you can gauge with your eyes. If a rider doesn't show it, it ain't there.

No one is saying being faster than the leader "counts" for anything more than what it is: being faster than the leader. If you are, even for one lap, good for you. That's something, not nothing.

When sigpig's parents told him that parable, they I'm guessing they described its moral like this:

Fast and steady wins the race; the hare was slower than the tortoise, so he lost. And sigpig's eyes lit up. Now I understand! he said. Then he booted up Vital.

Oh yes they are.... the point thy are trying to make is rider A is faster than rider B so he must be better even though rider A hasn't won a championship in many years...

You don't understand.

Reed Daytona 08

Dungey Freestone 11

Barcia when the lapper took him out on the last lap

Herlings Lommel MXoN Race 3

Many things can happen that prevent the fastest guy from winning. Most of the time, it's getting a bad start. That's all part of racing. The fastest guy doesn't always win. In motor sports, anything can happen.

Holy fuck this thread is at epic levels of stupid.Every example you gave they lost. IE somebody else got to the checkers before them.If 2 objects leave point A (the start line) at the same time and one reaches point B (the finish line) before the other , he will have traveled an equal distance in less time.IE a greater speed. The faster guy will always get to the finish line 1st in this universe. Reed wasnt faster, he never even finished. How the fuck do you not get that?

How the fuck do you not understand that there are other factors in racing besides speed that will determine your overall finishing position? Good god your reading comprehension has to be at a 3rd grade level. I'm done responding to this thread.
Speed = distance/time, Luckily distance and time are also how races are scored, What other factors are there? Anything that could happen in a race would effect a part of this equation. Lol You have no idea what speed is or how its figured. Do you have to fail a test to show how fuckin dumb you are before they let you in the JS7 fanboy club?

Yours is the comment I read least carefully, so if you're not gonna take offense to any specific thing I guess we'll leave it there.

Edit: I read your comment on page 2 and it turns out I understood perfectly what you said, so I won't retract anything. I will clarify though and say If a rider doesn't show it, it might as well not be there. I'll also clarify and say speed is something you can gauge with your eyes, but you might need a radar gun.

I'm not arguing it, but if you use this theory, Jeremy Martin does not have what it takes to be fast enough to be a main event guy consistently.

2 years ago Villopoto was also not fast enough to make a main event and Roczen was not fast enough to make a main event couple years ago either.
Hmm two years ago he wasnt fast enough to make the main... haha your parents must be proud of your 5th grade edumacation

You don`t understand what I am saying... lmao.

These guys are saying if you don`t make a main even if you crash, you were not good enough to make it.

Well the SX champ missed the main once, was he not good enough to qualify???

This thread is dumb, there is so many variables.

You're implying James Stewart, clearly, which opens an interesting can. You think JS fanboys (may as well include myself) will try to say that Stewart turning faster laps in 12th makes him better that night than the winner...

...meanwhile, I think you say things like "it means nothing" to spite us, which is an uglier thing to do than what we're doing. If you told Baggett his fast lap means nothing, nada, zilch, he'd probably say he agrees, and then when you left he'd call you a douche and use that fast lap as motivation for his next race.

It's especially obvious that you're spiteful when all sorts of riders have been brought up in this thread (including whoever the OP was referring to) but you chose to focus on Stewart. I see you.

Sorry for my rude comment.

If you look at laps 2-8, BB had two laps in the 51's and crashed the lap after setting his fastest lap.

Dungey had 6 laps in the 51's the other was a 52.080. So is BB really the fastest guy on the track?

It's not that hard to figure out. They even give the guy a trophy with a #1 on it and let him stand on the center of the podium.

speed is relative to distance over time. if the orator is not defining the distance, then it is impossible to to know what the orator is talking about. fastest anything (i.e. rider) on a location (i.e. track) means nothing. one could infer that if distance was not defined in conjunction with the distance objective having not been satisfied, then the orator was speaking of only that moment in time since its impossible to know the future outcome. either way, its a comment too vague in its semantics to even debate...but then what fun would that be.

The fastest rider on the track is the one who has the highest top speed on the fastest section of the track. If you can go 1/10 of a mile per hour more than anyone on the fastest section of the track, you are the fastest man on the track.......

Okay, let's try this a different way for those of you who still don't get it.

Who in this photo was the fastest rider at the end of the race?

It is not a trick question.

It looks to me like they're all standing still, so I'd argue it's a three way tie

because we insist on beating the semantics to death, the answer to your question "Who in this photo was the fastest rider at the end of the race?" is that your photo proves nothing other than who got to the finish line first because the race is over in the picture. if you would have asked "who averaged the fastest speed at the end of the race" then it is a completely different question, and is answerable with the above picture.

since everything in between the start gate and the finish line is relative (and everything outside of those bookends is irrelevant) then failing to define the point in time (or distance) makes the question vague to the point that it has several possible answers.

here is another time/distance question that is so vague that it will get different answers.

"what color does the sky appear?" it completely depends on the exact timing that you observe it.

Tomac knows what's up.

From RacerX Interview
Tomac: There’s been multiple races where I’ve been the fastest guy for one lap or in the heat race, but for the main event side I’ve struggled. Dungey’s obviously been the fastest guy through the twenty laps. He’s just been absolutely killing it.

There you have it. From gate drop to checkers the winner is the fastest and that's all that matters.
