How does it work if someone misses a whole season of racing and scores zero points? Do they keep their number if they have a career number? I was wondering this about James Stewart. Mike Brown scored enough points every season to keep number 3 and as soon as he didn't score enough points, Eli Tomac snatched it up.
But that's probably not how it'll work!

And the rumor about him racing all of the outdoor round would end the question of him keeping his number. His suspension isn't over until just before the season ends. So as of now, it's just speculation.

Ha. Kidding. But only a little. And the WADA suspension rules appear as clear as mud as well. But I won't debate too much because I don't really care.

Judging by the AMA's dissatisfaction with the ruling in the first place I would be surprised if they took away his number too.
But does that mean Troy Lee would have to rename Seven MX to TwoFiveNine?
Ivan Tedesco skipped the ENTIRE 2013 Season, not due to injury, but due to not having a ride. He returned for 2014 and was able to keep the number 9.

If you compete and don't score the necessary points (Mike Brown) you forfeit the number.
If you do not compete, you have a 1 year exemption from losing it.
The injury clause has been used by Grant Langston (2009) and Josh Hill (2011) as well.
