be allowed to shoot an uzi, even with adult supervision, either way sad story. WESTFIELD, Massachusetts (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

An 8-year-old shot and killed himself with an Uzi submachine gun like the weapon shown here.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

The boy was with a certified instructor and "was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury," a police statement said. Police called it a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died. His name was not released.

Although the death appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden district attorney's office were investigating, officials said.

The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun." People will be allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said.

Officials with the private club and the firearms group could not be reached for comment. A message left on a club answering machine was not returned. The C.O.P. group's machine clicked off without taking a message.

The sportsman's club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its Web site as an organization that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training."

It has eight firing ranges as well as archery and fishing facilities located on 375 acres in Westfield, about 100 miles west of Boston.

Single shot for boys, semi-auto for teens, full-auto adults only (relative terms)

Well as long as the 8 year old is decent, he should be able to launch rockets, nukes or whatever, otherwise its not freedom.

Even tho I dont own any guns, I still believe in gun rights but this is just straight stupidity.

i had a similar thought.

i support folks shooting and owning guns, but I don't know any 8 year olds that I would allow to shoot a full auto weapon.

X2 , I don't know why someone would think an 8 year old could handle a fully automatic gun.

That would be like letting an 8 year old kid take your 450 out on the pro track...

This is a horribly tragic incident and I personally would never allow my child to have the opportunity.

I can see the gun control lobbyist eating this one up.

Truth be known, if people want to save more children, outlaw swimming pools.

My first thought was, "what stupid idiot let his 8 y/o son shoot an Uzi?" Then I started to think about the fact that no matter how stupid the guy/gal was or wasn't that's no reason he should have lost his son. Tragic. Should have never happened.

My father taught me about guns at a very early age. I think about 6 or 7. Got my first gun at 8, M1 Carbine. Still have it. We were able to shoot his 1911 at that age also. The thing kicked in my hands like a mule ( I actually just got back from the range with the 1911 about an hour ago ). My dad was right there every time when one of us fired it. A fully auto pistol is way too much for a kid. I am shocked that they are allowed in some states. It is sad that that happened, wouldn't wish that on anyone.
