Two stage aerosol cans / paint

Edited Date/Time 1/8/2015 6:59am
Anyone out there have any experience / success using the two stage aerosol cans that can be purchased at auto body supply places ?

I am weighing out options for painting a frame and related colored matched components. Want something durable, fuel- oil resistant, and a reasonably glossy finish. Was thinking of trying these paint cans ,or just biting the bullet, and taking things to a body shop.

Any prep or finishing tips would be welcome. Trying to straighten up my old Indian 50 Boy Racer I have had since '69.

Unlaced the wheels, cleaned things up a bit, re-laced. New treads.

New number plates and fender.

A friend is working up a new seat foam for me. Cast his own mold off an original Boy Racer seat.

Engine rebuild parts.

Steering stop repaired.

She's begging for some paint, now.

The 2k clear? You will get a high gloss finish that won't look original. But if that's what you're after it will work. If you have a decent compressor you can buy a cheapo detail gun for $20 and a $40 water/oil filter, then spray single stage urethane. That will be glossy but not overly glossy like the clear coat.

I used the 2k clear on my Z1 tank/body, sprayed single stage urethane on my KX frame

I don't know what the original paint looked like on that bike. I have used the 2k clear on my bikes because it's oil, gas and chem resistant, however kidkawie is right that it makes a very glossy finish, but I love the look, durability and ease of use.

This is not my bike , but here is what it looked like originally. Stopped by my painters place, he did not want to mess with it, as there are quite a few related parts I need painted the same color.

I have a powder coater who will do the frame S/A , and all related color coded parts for $250. The closest color he has is a 3020 code red. It looks close, but will probably look over restored.

Is the 2K paint as durable as powder coating ?

Ever think of going with industrial urethane with hardner ?
We get Dupont at our local Napa, mixes 1 hardner to 4 paint, add
2 reducers. We use it on machine tools, oil and coolant resistant.
Comes out glossy.

the 2k with hardner is pretty tough, however nothing beats powder coating for durability. Just remember touch ups and re-paints are not easy with powder coating.
