I think they mean fading from 1st to 9th would not be considered a great ride....

They did do better than us though. Therefore it isn't pointless. Everyone has the CHANCE to come in 8th place or better, but we can't, because we aren't good enough. So there were 8 people that were better than him this weekend. The "well they did better than you" defense works perfectly in this situation because everyone had the opportunity to race at A1 this weekend. *Except Stewart
I can see the point you're making, I just don’t discuss a professional SX or MX race relative to how I did in the same race for various reasons. Myself and most people I’ve worked in shops and rode with would talk about a pros riding based on the level they compete at and rational expectations based on their historic performance. In a similar sense, I'll reserve my right to say my 2002 Kia Rio handles like a Pepsi can blowing through a windstorm even though I don’t personally build a better handling car.

I like seeing people defending a ride in a positive way, but if feedback on a professional racer needs to be based on how any of us did, there needs to be about 100 more threads created on how breath-takingly amazing each rider that signed up for A1 did.

No I totally get it, but are we to put an asterisk next to his 9th place finish because he faded?

The Alessi's naturally draw a crowd whenever their name appears on Vital. However, if the defenders were not so adamant, the detractors would likely reduce their responses.

There's no harm in congratulating Mike, but don't be offended when his propensity for fading is brought to light. When coupled with the family's history, any "pro-Alessi" thread is a gas-soaked rag looking for a match.

I see your point as well. The evidence of absence is a crucial part of reality yada, yada, yada. So in the same case, the rest of the world came in 23rd place. But just because I exist, doesn't mean I am as fast as Jimmy Albertson, who didn't qualify as well.

Its all good. I think we're breaking it down a lot further than needed. Either way we look at it he's a unique rider helping make the races interesting.

Did he really fade or did everyone who he beat off the gate just go forward faster? "Fading" is associated with poor fitness and I don't think that's ever been Mike's problem. If the dude was a shitty starter or went down in the first turn and came from dead last to 9th, we would be talking about what a great ride it was.
