Recently traded my old Yamaha snowmobile for a CR-125. I finally got around to tinkering with it today. I put fresh oil in the transmission, and a new spark plug. I went to kick start it and right away something did not feel right. Something feels like its binding up. So I pushed it out to the road and popped started in 2nd gear. It fired right up and I rode it back up to my drive way and put in neutral. It will rev up but not freely. It feels like something is binding. I hold it wide open in neutral and it revs up but right when you let off the gas it quickly shuts off and wont kickstart back up. Something is binding in there. Is this a symptom of the lower end ready to go out? Or I was also thinking if the previous guy had the motor apart and tightened the clutch basket nut to much? Any ideas guys? thanks!

I would pull the spark plug, and flywheel cover,..turn it by hand to see if you can "feel" or hear anything. Depending what you have for tools and knowledge, I'd systematically remove potential items to see if anything frees it up.You may wind up tearing it down anyway, so if you take it apart this way, you might be able to see if the guy left anything out of it, like a thrust washer or something,..Since you just put new oil in it, see if it already has metal in it too.

Dragoo168 I took the stator cover off as you suggested and turned the crank over manually. The lower end sounds and feels rather lumpy. Do you think I can get away with just changing the needle bearing or is a full rod kit in order? thanks again guys

Doesn't sound good, but I would pull apart the right side next (since you have to tear it down anyway), and look everything over real well. spin it again, now that the crank and piston are isolated from the clutch, etc., and see if it still feels like it did. If it feels the same, I would plan on a complete rebuild. Since you just aquired this bike, make sure to really look things over and measure clearances, so you don't waste your money on new parts and have something else come back to bite you.

Check this right quick. Is there a rag or something partially covering the air filter? 1 time my son put a plastic bag on his air filter to wash his bike and then forgot to take it out. The next time he started it, it would run, but ran pretty crappy. I pulled off the seat and low and behold!!! Then my son said "oh yeah, I forgot about that". Priceless!!!!
