Limited wrist movement- thumb throttle info

Edited Date/Time 1/8/2015 5:20am
Ok, call me a pussy whatever, I need a atv throttle. I broke my scpahoid along with loadsa other damaged to ligaments tendons in the wrist. So now I can't move it, or very little. Maybe enough to moto but not fast and its holding me back! I'm in the uk, which is annoying as I have had to buy a lightning tjrottle from US. even with that on im still having to bend my elbow right down and it's just no do able.

Bike is a crf 450 13. Question is I lnow I can put a thumb throttle on but it will get in the way of the brAke master cylinder, how can this be avoided? And what is the best tjrottle to buy, would a raptor one work or am I best sticking with Honda?

Thanks guys

Ergonomically, the Honda or Suzuki 450 quad throttles are better than the Yamaha thumb throttles. Being that you bike as both a push and pull cable, where a quad only has one, you will need to figure out how to remove the extra cable and plug the hole in your carb/throttle body.

Maybe look into Jackrabbit Devices (spelling?). They were a small company from around here who were trying to pioneer a new type of throttle for hillclimbing, but it never really caught on. If I remember right it basically turned your throttle into a small lever you pulled with your pointer finger, which sounds like it might be a good solution for you. Hopefully you can find some info on them, good luck with the search!

Thanks for the advice. Reading into it looks like you can plug the hole where the 2nd cable goes from. Think I will to with a Honda throttle need to ring a dealer to see what they can sort me out. The main problem is the brake reservoir, anyone know if you could move it over to the left hand side? And clutch on your right?

Didnt think it would get to this but riding sand a lot (mx) you always find yourself needing a lot more throttle than you usually would on hardpack etc.

JM485 that could be something to look into also, kinda like a jet ski throttle? Interesting I'll look into them!

Cheers

I don't see where the MC will be an issue. The quads have had disk brakes with a MC for decades, just like bikes.

Your CRF is FI, whereas the TRX is carb'd. The Suzuki and Kawi 450's are FI, and the YZF450R is FI, while then non-R model is a FCR. I don't know how that plays out with cables, but it's something to consider. You might want to call Motion Pro and see if they have any ideas about what cable might match up to which throttle.

Put the throttle on the left side. Your gonna have to roll it forward but you will probably get used to it, whiskey throttle will be less of an issue.

Get the throttle & front brake master cylinder off of a TRX450r. Problem solved. Though I doubt you need the MC?. I knew a few guys who dod this BITD when riding TRX250rs & CR250's. Worked just fine...................

Just a update, I have managed to get a throttle of a raptor, and for free so got lucky there. Got some spare cables lying around so going to make one up and get it measure this weekend. Think I have a way around the throttle getting in the way of the MC. I know a few people say put the brake on the left side but don't want to do that really. Should hopefully be done in the next week so I'll post a update and video if I can!

OP, I did this on a YZ450F following a wrist injury.
I used this throttle assy and had Motion Pro make me a cable in a couple days. I had no issue with the MC.

One thing to remember, a 450 moves enough air to POSSIBLY, MAYBE, cause the slide to 'surf' the intake airflow at high RPM, WOT. This is the reason the bikes have a push/pull arrangement. It is very unlikely, but the potential is there. The quads only have one cable b/c they have a microswitch in the throttle housing that cuts ignition timing in the event of a hung throttle.

Good luck, I used my set up for a few weeks while rehabbing a wrist. I found it did increase my arm-pump, unfortunately.

Good on you for finding a way to ride.

FYI, if you heal up some and want to return to the twist throttle, try turning it like a doorknob, rather than "pulling" it backward. That technique did wonders for my arm pump and it may help you.

Usp4u, that does worry me slightly heard a few people mention this, guess I will have to see how it goes! Thanks all for the help everyone too

! There's no chance of regaining any more movement than what I have at the moment, which is pretty low anyway, so will just have to Stick with the thumb throttle if it works out. Pretty excited really to see how it works, and how much it will take to adapt fully to it, will keep you all posted thanks again

I got a buddy I ride with who is a pro level MX ATV racer, He has bikes to cross train on. He has a thumb throttle on all of them, and he rips on the bikes as well, Works great for him.
