Chicken unquestionably had some of the coolest custom helmets throughout his career, but this helmet was at the time one of the wildest to ever appear.

Keep in mind that this was 1990 and that the custom helmet phase was really still just starting to take off.

In the late 80's custom painted helmets had straight, clean lines in their design for the main part.
The first time I saw him wearing this helmet blew my mind... He wore it at the infamous '90 Atlanta SX.

Back then- we had a satellite TV dish out in our lower field that was the size of car... Nothing like the Direct TV dishes now that are the size of a Papa John's pizza.
This was also in the days were you could get "live TV feeds" of events on your satellite dish. If you knew the correct coordinates, you could watch the entire event live in your living room as it happened.

I recorded that particular race-- and besides being an incredible race worth watching a few times, I also continued to freeze frame that helmet! There just wasn't anything like it at the time...

I still have my own Moto 5 with a custom 1990 paintjob from back then... While it doesn't completely resemble Matiasevich's helmet, it does feature a fluorescent "melted liquid" design that was all the rage!

Man, I am still totally OBSESSED with the 1990-1992 setup that Wardy and Chicken had. Those dudes gear and their KX's still look fuckin' badass. If I ever get my hands on a Kawi 250, I am making a throwback replica of those bikes with a big #3 on it.

RyanLester761, were you able to work out a deal with poler on his Matiasevich helmet? It's definitely one of the coolest looking helmets from that era.

And if your question hasn't already been answered, this helmet is the VFX-2 model (I've also seen it written as VF-X2). It comes after the VFX and before the VFX-R.

Here's my favorite from Seattle SX this year. Got to hang out with Chicken, Denny and Cody Gilmore after the races. He was always one of my favorites growing up so it was pretty rad that he let me drunken mumble his ear off all night. Good times for sure...

I loved Chicken (and his battles with Bradshaw) and use to watch him all the time! I remember standing in the stands when he and DB crashed in Vegas and he jumped up and flipped Damon off for cross lining him! It was great!
I loved the 90s clothing and the bikes....my favoite bike was my 92 KX250. That thing was a tank but it was sweet! The mid 90s were a great time to be into MX.
