Is it absolutely necessary to re-hone the cylinder...

Putting a new top-end (piston.rings) on my son's CRF250. Pulled the cylinder, and to these untrained eyes, it looks pretty good. No marring, and the crosshatch looks consistent. I don't have a ball hone, and the closest shop is 50 minutes away. Does this cylinder look like it needs to be honed? If it does, I'll just break down and buy one. Take a look:

I have built several motors for riders on shoestring budgets. If the cylinder is good, I can sometimes save them some labor by not honing. I have never had a problem with these motors, but they are also well taken care of.

Yours looks like it is good. Make sure your ring gaps are positioned and sized right!

Save them some labor? Honing takes what....1 minute.
Honing is necessary if you want a good ring seal. But not necessary for the engine to run.

You can deglaze the cylinder with brake cleaner and a scotch-brite pad. Just brush the pad with medium pressure following the lines of the cross-hatch.

I've done the scotch brite method as well, but used the Grey pad, which is generally a different "grit" than the red or green, and i used oil, cleaned with brake cleaner, then rubbed a film of oil again to finish. It works well.
