Twin chamber outer oil

So I have a dumb question. The cartridge in the fork does all the damping and the outer oil lubes and adjusts the bottoming resistance. So I should be able to use any type of oil right? I should be able to use 10w-30 synthetic or what ever. If I'm not right could someone tell me why?

It would mostly effect the way the spring seat flows through the oil as well as the last 1.5" in the bottoming cup.

I don't think that's a good idea because 10-30 is to thick/heavy and will have to much friction and probably ruin ur bushings prematurely, I run synthetic 5 weight or 0 weight fork oil because of the slickness.

The motor I'll works in metal on metal part in an engine up to 200 degees. How would it add wear? It should make bushings last longer because it can handle it better.

The outer chamber oil lubricates and controls the last 1/4 of the fork stroke. You will have bad results if you do not use 10,5, or 0 weight (depending on your body weight).

Motor oil is too thick and will not respond correctly to the rapid movements of the fork.

If you insist on being frugal and not doing the job right, your best alternative is automatic transmission fluid (ATF) carried at any store. Some old time mechanics swear by it and ATF has similar viscosity flows of conventional fork fluid.

Two different styles, but as the fork compresses the spring seat passes through the volume of oil and creates a secondary damping effect.





The thicker the viscosity of oil you use the stiffer the fork will become as the seat passes through the oil. Too thick of an oil in the bottoming cup can also lead to a very harsh bottom out as the hydraulic lock will stop abruptly instead of progressively slowing the bottoming action.
