wow, your wife does good work. Mine likes to put together clean new parts I have already prepped, but she don't like getting dirty.

Neither does she and I'm sure it'll cost me in some way lol but once she starts something then failure is not an option and its come out better than I had expected can't wait to get it bolted on once I've got the wiring/cdi cleaned up and bolted on first!! I'm hoping that all the woman hours she has put into it then ill have an easier time of convincing her that it belongs in the house Wink

Matt are you going to Telford? If so I'll meet you in the bar for a cocktail or two!

I can't believe how great she made that tank look.
Can you summarize the process in just a bit more detail? I can't say I've heard of the Vaseline trick. Clearly whatever she did was the way to do it.
Don't push your luck with bringing it into the house. You got a new tank out of the deal

Haha I've been told never again. Max power she started off sanding from 150 to 1200 grit and various nail file blocks which buffed up things quite nice. Once it was sanded it became grey in patches as though the plastic lacked any 'moisture' so as with the airbox she worked Vaseline in and left it over night. Not sure if plastic can actually 'soak' up moisture but the next day it was wiped off and no grey patches have appeared since even with more buffing!! We tried various waxes/polishes to get it to shine up but we got best results from my wife's 'saddle soap' used to restore leather saddles. Here's a pic of before. Tank on the left is the one we chose as the other is too far gone and has a patch where it has melted in the past!!

Only draw back was the seized bolt which I had to drill and tap out which rounded out the insert slightly but since it can't be seen under the shroud ill be able to sleep at night lol

I enjoyed this rebuild more than most. Too often I hear of a spouse that doesn't understand the passion a man has for old junk motorcycles. It's refreshing to see that your wife doesn't only understand, but pushes you out of the way to show you how it's done.
I'm wondering how the shine will hold up with some fuel spilled on the plastic? I can believe how new she got that thing to look. You both have motivated me to freshen the tank on my KX

Thanks max that's great to hear. I wouldn't have got this far if it wasn't for her. With four young children its hard to find the time sometimes. She actually bought me the bike for valentines last year and if I ever want anything I give her my order and its on its way. Don't get me wrong she still thinks I'm some kind of weirdo to get so excited over a new nut or bolt but she understands lol it's a hobby and a pretty good one!! as for the tank I won't have that problem as it will never see fuel as I could t bring myself to ride it. My next project will be a rider (bob Moore replica 94 yz 125 finally decided!!!!). I think the main thing is to get it sanded flat then the shine is like anything else it needs maintaining with some sort of build up 'barrier', the more effort you put in then the thicker the protective layer you build up!!

Well it's been a while as I briefly switched over to the dark side. Tarmac track days!!!!! Love for two wheels never goes away though and now I'm determined to get this project moved on and also to get into twin shock racing.
Had a few items acid dipped and bead blasted and I've ebayed all parts that I won't be using to fund what I need next. Next on the list is rebuilding my forks with NOS fork legs so ill post up some pics over the next week or so.

Well done! I had almost forgot about this restore. Nice to see you back at it.

I stalled out on my 1978 Suzuki RM125C project and this is helping to inspire me to get on with it. Cheers!

Whether it takes 2 years or 22 years to finish it will get finished. Life takes over sometimes but that's the beauty of these restorations there's no rush!!! I'm not riding it or competing on it so there's no deadlines.

Oh yes that was my 96 yz 125 I had off Steve Dixon. I believe it was malins british championship bike or one of them. Had pretty much everything left on it except the ohlins forks. Wish I still had it too. You could hear that thing over all the other bikes out on the track it sounded a beast with the dep pipe and carbon silencer.

I still had all these up until last year when I have them away to someone in one of these forums who was starting a Malin replica. It was my first 125 and that seat was pretty smart held you in place close up below
