My CR eats gear levers for fun!!???

Is this common?

After 6 years, the gear lever on my ktm is still tight. On the after market stuff (currently has an Apico forged lever) on my honda, it's slack after every ride.

I don't really want to swap to a steel one and wear the gearbox shaft splines instead.

Are there any aftermarket ones that are tough enough for sustained use, and of I bite the billet and pay for an OE Honda one, will it be worth the expense?

I don't really stamp on it hard, or abuse it either?

What year is your CR? I have the Hammerhead on my '86 CR500 and have had no problems. Not the cheapest by any means but with all the vibration and me being a bigger guy, I have had no issues.

It's a '91.
Always used to wear them out annually at the splines as a kid too, but assumed they were meant to be sacrificial to preserve the gearbox splines.

Only since I've had the ktm, that I realise this isn't meant to be the case.

I had the same issue with my shifter always coming loose on my yz's I tried every brand and even genuine levers. I bought a billet Hammerhead shifter but it started rattling too, so i drilled the thread out and milled a flat section on the top side of the spline boss and used a longer stainless 6mm with a nyloc nut and tightened it more than usual. it hasn't moved at all since I've done that and that was about 6 months ago, and I would say that I'm pretty hard on the shifter.

Excellent.

Good to hear it's not just me that kills them too.

I was thinking along the same lines. Saw cut to widen the slot in the shifter where it pinches closed to ensure it closes up hard, and stick an M6 bolt all the way through to keep it done-up tight.

Have you tried loctite on the splines,make sure both surfaces are clean (no oil grease or rust etc) & that you put the shifter in the right spot first time,you will have some time to re adjust if not before it goes off,if possible leave overnight to cure Smile
