@ JA946 I'm afraid that you are beginning to let your self down due to the lack of your knowledge...

A couple of things that may help put things into perspective :
Not all batteries are the same chemistries or the same power densities therefore not all batteries carries the same risks .

raffe bikes do not use lipo .. your Cell phone will more than likely be lipo but it will have a BMS

all batteries carries a risk , but no more than Petrol very close to hot surfaces or with the risk of ignition of petrol from sparks or naked flames

No battery ( any size or chemistry ) should be pierced as it can cause a short , get very hot and catch fire.
No battery should be left unattended whilst charging. No battery should be left to Charge over night, And all battery chemistries should be treated with the same respect as you would treat a 5 litre container of fuel for a gas bike..

( have you every seen a 5 liter can of fuel explode ... wow now that is very scary !! ( think of flame throwers) )

nearly all high power batteries has some form of BMS ( Battery Management System ) , the batteries in the videos that you have posted do not have a BMS .

Nearly all electric cars and Bikes that are on the market today have some form of LI chemical in there batteries.

Basically just charge the battery after every ride and after some time fresh Tires.

This could be a real advantage especially for the Parents. If it is your Sons first bike you probably dont want to work on it all the time.... You just want to have a fun Time out at the Track with your Son Smile

What's your problem JA946?

You've been busting this guy's balls every time you post in this thread.

First you insinuate that the bike is made in China. Then you ask if the brake line has been fixed when the OP already said it will be correct on the production version. Finally you post the video's of exploding batteries that are not even the same type as what will come with the bike.

If you don't like the bike or the concept of electric bikes then don't read the thread. Posting false information or continuing to ask questions that have already been answered do nothing to assist the OP with his original question.

Curious while on subject. The boy would get stopped every so often when he was riding, prob about 3 times per session. They would first touch the motor, and seemed to be touching or checking all the wires and electronics. Then did something to the computer or clicking something not sure? seemed they would click away then log something down, oh then inspect the chain and send him out again. Always wondered what was on that computer.
I guessing you must have saw the bike in the early development stages, we were logging motor, battery temps, checking connectors and also generally checking the bike over ( hardware ). We have spent many hours testing many motors, controllers and MX components for this bike making sure we find the best and most reliable combination.

Thank you for your support.

We are in the process of getting some promo video shot that will be uploaded to the website as soon as its been shot and edited.. Here is a old video from the early developmet stages of the the mini thunder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8ffkHNptvQ&index=6&list=UUhfSX9FDPMG9my…

testing have been going on in race conditions for around 10 months and are now confident to release the bike knowing that there will be no major problems for race use.

I was the opposite. I grew up with a lot of land to ride on that surrounded our house. My Mom was the one that was around in the summer time when I did most of my riding as a kid. Mom's rule was if I was going to ride, just ride and nothing else. No starting and stopping, no throwing rocks, no start it up and shut it off. If she didn't hear the bike running she had to stop her work and come looking. As long as she heard the bike, she knew everything was ok. Kind of a reverse alarm clock.

I get the thunder and lightning thing because it is electric. But parents do the buying and the age of parents that are buying are parents that were teenagers in the 80's and 90's that heard the song "Its electric, woogie woogie waggie" Why not name it the Woogie or the Woogie Waggie, or the smaller one the Woogie and the larger one the Woogie Waggie or the smaller one the Woogie Waggie and the larger one the Woogie Woogie Waggie? A bike for a 5 year old named the Woogie Wagie, I would buy that shit. As soon as I read the name Woogie Waggie the first thoughts that would come out of my head is " Its Electric". Plus it is kind of funny and a buying parent would smile and associate with it.
Also, Mom's are around more than Dad's. 20 minutes to change a battery? That is to much for a Mom. Make it easier for a Mom to change with simple connections and little to no tools.
And always remember, I accept checks for good ideas Smile

My son is 6 and the electric bike revolution intrigues me. That being said, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about with that song, haha. I'm thinking I may be a bit younger than the age of most parents you're talking about.

Here is the uncut version I found. Here you can see it went the distance, well almost 10min a few turns from finishing the race. I believe motor 1 they placed well. Pala had some long mini races!

Can you share what the DNF was due to?

My son raced Cobra 50's and the bike appears to be really slow. Well all the bikes seem slow. Is this a beginner class?

@ Triplefive
The Gas tank is a fluid container that may come in handy for future developments of this bike and for future models it also keeps the bike looking like a regular gas bike ( to a certain degree ) which the kids love ..
also it makes people ask questions :-)

@blueripps
Yes I can share the reason for the DNF on this occasion . It was due to the throttle we were using at the time, it was a regular e-bike throttle that failed mechanically, it was this fail that prompted use to look for a bullet proof electric throttle, after much testing with different configurations and did not really find anything off the self that would be durable enough, the decision was made to design and make our own that uses a regular motorcycle cable throttle ( tried and tested hardware ) but link it into the electronic throttle sensor so now we have the durability of a real motorcycle throttle that operates the electronics that is now out of harms way should ever the bike be dropped.

@brocsdad
The race in the video was not a beginners class, all the bikes were regular gas mini race mx bikes ( except our e-mx bike) so I can not really comment about how fast or how slow these bikes were moving only that the mini thunder was competitive against them.

Cool....

I'm all for the electric movement. We race a little BMX during the summer Friday night Series since it doesn't interfere with MX and the park is very close to the lake and a housing community. I was thinking if the electic bikes take off we could have MX tracks close to the city or town without any complaints. It would be more affordable since there would less travel, etc.

It's a win win for everyone involved.

We built this bike with racing in mind and not just to get something out there to cash in on.

If you want to sell things, you have to get a better website. User experience with them are as important as a good motorcycle. I clicked different links and it did nothing, what will the motorcycle do? It's all related.

I would market it as the "perfect pit bike" that every rider in the world should purchase! Racing it would be secondary

the above post was not relating our bike It was a general question about the new electric KTM and was asking for feedback for my own personal interest... We have nothing to do with KTM. Are you referring to the link in the above post or earlier post related to the silent thunder ? .

Wel its been a bit longer than we anticipated but its finally launched .

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/raffebikes/electric-motocross-mini…

It has taken us a bit longer to get this out there due to the upgrades that have been carried out as a direct result from feedback from this forum.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the MX community for the general support as it has been helpful in making the silent thunder probably the best kids (racing) electric MX bike on the market.

Cool product. I'll be needing one in a couple of more years.

The quietness of electric in general can be seen as a negative aspect but we believe that it is a very big positive for all motor sport as it will open up more riding venues .

when does something like this ever come in on time? never!

no doubt frustrating for you guys with the xmas sales kick missed this year.

give you time to really sort any bugs and get a good marketing campaign together.

cheers

Thanks for your support and yes its very frustrating not getting it out there before the Xmas holidays.
The bike was due to go onto kickstarter in September, and it had already undergone months of track/race testing , the extra delay have been due to upgrading some components and electronics which were the direct results of some suggestions put forward on this forum, which improves upon what was already a very good bike to begin with.

Looks nice to me. I have 2 & 3 year old boys and have an oset now. I let him rid it in parks....can't do that with a gas one.
The only thing I could see doing maybe is a tamer one too. From looking at site (lot of info don't know what the other guy is talking about) and seeing everything that comes on it (top of the line) it looks expensive.
The oset is kinda lame looking and not to fancy but boys like it but I did see there coming out with an mx version now too, but no real info on it yet. So would like to see how they match up.
Nice job
How much? ( 3r&d time I typed this and disappears)
Fyi I did just look at oset site and they have new models and more info.

The silent mini thunder was made to be competitive and able to compete along side race prepped gas bikes , so components had to be up to the task for strength and function but also have all the advantages of a electric bike , Im not sure if there is any other small wheeled electric mx bike on the market ( or due to come onto the market) that can compete at national levels like the mini thunder is able to . The mini thunder can be as tame as you like as the power and speed can both be adjusted to suite rider ability. Its not a toy and was never intended to be made as one, we have done all we can to keep the price as low as possible without compromising its function as a pure race bike but we also wanted it to be a beginners bike that can grow as the rider becomes confident.

The price of the the silent mini thunder is on the kickstarter page kickstarter and is comparable with a branded racing model of a gas mx bike.
