I've been fortunate to have a property with my own track for the last few years
but sometimes I feel Like I should sell it and just travel around to ride other
tracks in the area as it seems I spend too much time on maintenance.
I'd rather just be riding - I'm a vet rider who just likes to ride for fun

Advantages -
Ride when you want
Safe place for my kids to ride
No entry fees

Disadvatages
A lot of work prepping and keeping weeds off etc
Less time to ride
Cost of equipment to maintain
Can get bored sometimes

If there are places around to ride, don't bother with it. I will never have my own track because there is still one at my folks' house, and about 3 AMA tracks within a half hour of my house.

Some of these guys with no where to ride though would probably give their left nut to have your set-up.

My own. Never know when other tracks might close, leaving you SOL. Plus, owning the land and being able to do with it what you want is definitely a perk.

I don't want to prep and water.

My own. Nothing is better than getting home from work and using the last hour of daylight to spin some laps. Can turn a shitty day good real fast.

Keep the land , ride a one lined goat trail track , use the time saved on track prep to ride other tracks.

Definitely my own! Hands down not even a question.

I am fortunate in that I have track building equipment at my disposal any time I want it So usually every 3 to 4 weeks I change a few things and have new track.

Yes it is some work to keep up but prep work & maintenance isnt that bad if you have at least a 4x4 quad.
Im just about to get set up with a weed sprayer on mine and as it is I can pull a small drag which done once every couple of weeks keeps the weeds from getting a good hold.

Other than the need for rain once in a while the benefits far outweigh the burdens for me. Its actually kind of a fun hobby for me maintaining my track. Plus it just looks so damb cool having a track right in your back yard!Cool

While it can get tedious with maintenance, I would like my own track, think of a scramble type surface (classic Unadilla or old school british tracks) with some modern day challenges and that'd be me! When you get bored switch it up a little (if you have the correct equipment that is) and then shred it! Could you not just have both? Maybe means a tad less riding but you get the variety of multiple tracks.

If I had this for my own I'd be in heaven! Woohoo Track is Highham, in Somerset, UK, used in the 2014 British EVO Series, god I love Evo / VMX racing!

Why don't you start a small club 5-10 people they do the maintenance you ride the track ?

I had my own track most of my life, I think it restricted me in some ways but the ability to ride everyday for at least a few hours a time def helped me get better. I recently moved away from that place and I missss having my own track. Don't be crazy, keep your land and save for a skid steer so maintenance isn't such an issue. I love running equipment anyhow.

I don't know the ins and outs, but insurance issues may be a reason not to

I've tried to have a few good people/friends who I know and trust help - and most of the times it
works.

Every once in a while they will bring a friend who turns out to be a complete jackhole and ruins it
for the others

I always make ANYONE who rides at the track ( and parents of Minors ) sign a waiver before they set
foot on the track

You know what works great for weeds? A back tire.

It's nice to have one, rototiller and a little sprayer is all you need for maintenance. The trick is seed grass on the jumps, then string trim or mow it to keep it down. Weeds are a never ending issue but grass is very manageable. If you want ruts made, then just work the corners and make it nice and soft.

I figure when it gets hard packed, it's good hard packed practice. Where I live we get pretty good dew in the mornings so I ride really early before it gets too dusty, it takes too much water and time to water it just for myself.

In my experience...there is no substitute for seat time. Having your own track means the only limiting factor is your "want to". I wouldn't do much prep but the cost of wearing out bikes might get heavy...Tongue

I have a pretty extensive track on my property. While it is a ton of work & expense I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's always well prepped and if we need to practice something I can build it. We run an invite only Tuesday night practice and some weekends and it's nice to just but the bikes back in the shop when we are done verses loading up and driving.......................

I've had my own...a couple different layouts...and found out that I spent way more time on the tractor and dozer, than I did my bike. Way too many other things that 'needed' to be done around the house.... it was easier for me to load up and pay my $15/$20 and ride...then come home.

What does a little skid steer run anyways for a decent used one. And would a tractor with a little bucket and a box blade/other attachments be more ideal or a skid steer?

In the next year or two, my wife and I are thinking about buying her dad's property. It's a horse property and the arena is lit and the lighting could easily be expanded to light the pasture. I want to build a little track in the pasture so when we put the horses in for the evening, I can go ride. I think a tractor will be what I end up with eventually.

My buddys home track is awesome. it gets hardpack and rocky though.

He grooms it twice a year, spring and fall.

Just ride the track and the moving dirt will stop weeds and stuff from growing.

Would prefer my own for sure. 80 miles one way to the nearest track around here. Couldn't imagine being able to spin some laps after work anytime I wanted.

Definitely my own track, without a doubt!

The closest I've come to this otherwise lottery winning dream was back in 97 to 2002 - when I had complete access to a private track belonging to a local dealership. It was an awesome assortment of table tops, doubles, a ting whoop section and lovely big sweeping berms. Probably not much in reality but back then it felt like having my very own Anaheim. I could go there pretty much whenever I wanted for just £10 a year. Spoke with another guy who also used to ride it back then a couple of years ago and he said it's virtually all gone now; just mounds covered in trees and grass with a pond in the middle Sad

My dozer was actually $5k from a friend going through a divorce. Case 450 with 6-way blade. Yeah, you gotta know how to work on one if you are going to own one. My first one was a IH TD-6 62 that I bought for $1400 put a few bucks in, ran for 6 years and sold barely running for $2k. The Drott clamshell alone weighed around 6k...............
