Edit: Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to screen print the pin it shirt design with the text "pin it" on a koozie and pass them out for free at the races. It doesn't cost hardly anything and people love free stuff. A buddy of mine used to do that, and people would end up wandering back to him and buying some shirts.
Question is what do you look like? Sexy sells....
Pit Row
Don't you think your girlfriend will get mad...
But good luck, you will need it.
I do applaud the person for the effort, because that is what most people lack. But just take a look at some of the casual wear of a lot of the different gear companies make... ONE is a good example (although IMHO not so much recently, same with SPY). They have some really tight designs, but do you think they are just moving massive volume of casual wear? I'd be inclined to say no, it only supplements their gear business. I'm willing to bet that TLD moves the most casual wear aside from FOX, and comparing those two there is no doubt who has better stuff (TLD).
Your boyfriend has to ask him self what his designs are providing that aren't already out there by a hundred different companies. These just blend in with all of the other designs out there. I sometimes see adverts in RacerX for some casual wear companies or yet another mom and pop graphics company, and I wonder how they decided it was a good idea to go whole hog and invest that much resource.
Go back to some magazines from the 90s and early 2000s and look at the casual wear adverts from Xtreme gear... these quasi-motivational poster designs have already been done, failed, and disappeared rom the market a couple times over.
And lastly, since you asked for constructive criticism...
-The halftone dots MUST go.
-Every single font used in every one of these designs is cliche, doesn't fit with any aspect of the design, and no doubt came from a free font website. Tell your BF to delete 99% of his fonts... he should be able to get by with no more than 30 or 40 on his computer, and even them he won't use most of those.
-If he plans on selling this stuff, and from the looks of that website he is, he needs to clean up his artwork a lot more. For example, those grips on he Grip It shirt... he obviously just went to Blending Options>Stroke and dropped in an outline to the grips after he had used the magic wand and eraser tool to cut them out of the design. Then duplicated a layer and rotated it a bit. I can tell because the same bits of carelessness appear on both grips.
-Composition Composition Composition! Where am I supposed to look, where do you want my eye to go?
-Color Values. On the Grip It shirt, the backgrund is a very hard black, while the image he wants us to look at, the Grips, are a washed-out medium intensity half valued grey. It does not balance at all.
3. Word to mouth marketing only goes so far, even for the small starters on the block.
I'm still learning soo much about marketing/design. I'm Atleast 2 -3 months out before I give it a hard attempt again
