trying to find a bike to better suit me

Edited Date/Time 8/9/2014 9:12pm
im a 2 stroke dude ive had 2 rm250s 04 and a 97 sense ive been riding (3ish years ago) now i have a 04 thats quite pumped out by a local pro and i love it i just feel like with a brand new 2015 rmz250 i might be faster on the corners but with the less power will it be harder to clear jumps? im also thinking a 450 but i dont like the weight and harder starting for trails
so can someone elighten me im 16 been riding for around 3 years i weigh 180-190 like trails and track (track more) and i want a bike i was also think of a heaver flywheel for better corners and i am riding on a bald tire so that could be it too

was also thinking a 125 but i weigh too much and its not as versatile for the trails

Look at the KTM, they will have what you are looking for. Electric Start for the 4 strokes and multiple selection of 2 strokes. Enjoy.....

For me, well, I will stick with my KX.

If you're concerned about power, you won't notice much between the 250 rm and rmz. The horse power is probably comparable between your 11 year old tired bike and a brand new 250-f. Suspension and handling will be hands and away better on the new bike and will probably make clearning jumps easier with is smooth trackable power.

Buy a yz 250 2-stroke used 06-to-14, buy the cleanest one you can find
Ebay is full of parts, they are reliable, fun, and a great bike and in my opinion would be a great bike for what you are looking for.
Did i mention very easy to maintain.
Also be careful with bald tires, they don't work to good on a dirt bike lol. Have fun

If you really want to improve your skills and cornering get a 125.

Hey man,

Our stories kind of sound pretty similar. I'm 17 and have been riding for 4 years now, except I'm 125 or so lbs. I recently switched to a 125 2 stoke and I will never go back to a 4 stroke, well I don't think I ever will.

So anyway, just like all the upcoming riders 3 years ago I jumped from a small bike right to a 250f.. Worst decision ever. The thing felt so heavy and I learned to ride lazy, ie never using the clutch, sitting down a lot and so on. I rode that bike for 2 season never really feeling too comfortable, so for 2014 I thought I'd sell it and get myself a 125 2 stroke.

After I sold my minty looking used 2009 YZ 250f, which probably needed a full rebuild, I found a good deal on a 2005 YZ 125 with a new Athena 144 kit on it. The very first ride I took on this bike I realized this was the bike I should have bought in the first place, not the 250f. My 125 is so much fun, it took me a little while to get down the way the power hits, and having to use the clutch in those tight corners and areas of the track that keep the bike working hard, but I'm riding better than I ever have, I'm hitting all the jumps I never could, I'm railing my corners smoother and I'm becoming a better rider overall. To anyone coming off a small bike I really recommend a 125, the 250f is too much, too heavy and the cost of maintenance is overwhelming.

My recommendation to you is to either keep your RM 250, or hop onto a KTM 150SX and see how you like that.

I love my 125, its just too much fun and leaves me smiling every lap Smile

ty all for the comments helped a lot i think new tires (trying to get asap) and more practice my 04 will be good i can try a 08 too but i dont think they changed much after 04 and the ktm sounds good too a while ago i was thinking a ktm200 but that more of a trail bike but i wonder how it would be at the track with better suspension and a stealth flywheel idk what to think about i love my 250 cause is revs fast too and that would make it rev slower

It's better cheaper faster to get a new bike. The tires will also be new on a new bike.

*sarcasm*

I say replace the tire also. . . If you still have problems in the corners, start looking at bike.

While a flywheel weight will smooth out the hit on your 04, the quickest way to mellow it out for the Cow Mountain trails is to retard the timing a few degrees. Throw some good tires on there, freshen up your suspension and go ride.

I lived up there for many years, moved to Cen Cal about 10 yrs ago.

If your suspension is set up by Race Tech for MX, you're going to find it very rough on the rocks of Cow, or the roots on Penie. You can try opening up the compression clickers to make it softer, but it's a compromise at best.

If you're like most weekend warriors, a smoother responding engine will actually give you better lap times on a MX track than a hard-hitting one, even if it doesn't feel as fast. It will absolutely make life easier on the snotty uphills when you're hitting the trails and not the track.

Truth is, your RM is probably a pretty good bike for you. Setting it up to accommodate your needs will likely pay dividends.
