We've been saying it for years. That's one of the core proposals of the Brett Downey foundation, I think. Separate them. The last 20 minutes of every hour is 85 and below. But it still keeps happening.

100% agree with ya.
In Oz on all the tracks i ride it is split up.
its bad enough fast guys on the same size bikes as the slower guys little alone putting small bikes in.

So heartbreaking... my sincerest condolences go out to the family. I do not have a kid, but my 9 y/o brother has just started riding at the tracks with me. I get nervous when even the faster little guys come up on him, much less a big bike. I don't ride with little bikes anymore because of it. (most tracks seperate around here anyways) I can only imagine the pain of the family, and if the accident was because of a bigger bike out there, you know he has to feel a heavy burden on his shoulders. That would destroy someone mentally. God be with these people. Prayers are headed your way.

Hate to hear when things like this happen.
Here in Socal all none of the tracks split practice, but when there are kids on 85's out there they are usually faster than half the guys on big bikes

This incident is truly unfortunate. Thoughts and condolences go out to the family.

It's very tricky, some 85 riders can hang with and develop by riding with big bikes, others not so much. I only let my kid on the big track when I was riding behind him for 50s and 1st year 65s. After that I would watch and judge the riders, if they were responsible and cautious he could ride with them. Second year on 85s the worries were over. We have only ridden tracks with open practice, keep in mind tracks up here are not as busy.

It was a sad deal. My daughter was right behind the crash when it happened. She said Tanner came off the jump a little sideways and started to swap on the landing. The other kid came over the jump right behind him and tried to get over but it was to late. There was no where to go. He ended up hitting Tanner in the back while he was still on the bike.

If you seen the hit you would know that a 85 hitting a kid on a 50 probably would have had the same result. It's nobody's fault. It was just a bad crash.

That's beyond heartbreak. I don't know the circumstance and I don't care. I'm only interested in expressing that, in some tiny measure, we grieve with that family. I also grieve with whoever landed on him. He may have made a mistake, or it may have been a random accident, but either way it's a day he'll never get over.

R.I.P. lttle man and condolences to his family. Also thoughts and prayers for the other rider and his family. I hate hearing about things like this and it really strikes the cord as our second child is due next month and our first is approaching riding age. I cannot imagine.

The past two times I have ridden at RV practice was split 3 ways after about 12PM when it got busy, it is my home track and this is devastating to hear.

Dang I was out there yesterday morning too. I had a buddy calling asking if I was involved. I knew nothing about it when I had left.

River Valley is one of the only tracks that I'm real comfortable on. All of the jumps are pretty forgiving and there are a minimal amount of truly blind jumps. Unfortunate that we lost one there. RIP little dude.

On another note, was that really Tommy Hahn out there yesterday? We were parked in the back by a guy on a Suzuki number 22 that had an AMA sticker and looked a LOT like TH. He was pretty fast but at one point I saw him smoking a cigarette. Thought it was odd.

I know some tracks don't like to split,especially if there is only a small number of mini's, but it really needs to be split, IMO. 85's should have the option of riding with big's, if they feel they can handle it, but not all grouped together by default.

A lot of the 85's I've see out there lately are fast enough to not hinder the big bikes. Some are hucking jumps I don't really feel comfortable on. I think this family has been riding a long time so I imagine the kid was no stranger to what he was doing.

This is terrible and sad news. And what's worse is this happens far too often. When are track owners going to wake up and split practice sessions up. MX will always be inherenly dangerous, but having riders of different abilities and bike sizes on the track at the same time is JUST PLAIN STUPID. Some tracks do it and some don't. I for one would much rather wait 20 minutes for my wave than put others and myself at risk.

Ranger you don't split practice for 1 85. It could have been a 125, 250 or 450 beginer or novice rolling a jump and been landed on. If you don't have hundred of more riders I don't know of any track out west that splits them up. And no its not about money for the track. Its about giving the rider the most time for his money on the track. If you split the 85's from the big bikes and they have their own track do then not allow them to ride with the big bikes. It was an accident and nothing more. If you want to stop them all then don't open the track or don't ride a bike.

Since we can't seem to leave this discussion out of this thread, at least some people get it. We won't be splitting practice anytime soon out west. Unless I have 100+ riders it's gonna stay that way. So glad that after 8 years I've never had a death at my track. I might close it completely if I ever do.
