Get this. If you bought into the Dow in March of 1999, you have made 0% in returns. Kind of blows the "buy and hold" theory out of the water.

the bailout will help a lot of big banks, but they've always said it wouldn't be the sole answer to this problem.

greed across the world is becoming more and more obvious every day.

Is short selling still outlawed? If it is and the market is still in the toilet, think where the market would be if you could still short sell.

It wasn't outlawed.......only restricted on a specific list of stocks. Since 911 though there has been a system in place to stop the automated shorts on a dropping market.

Going to be a fun October for sure.

Here's something to ponder, since the market is selling off, where are people putting the capital they receive from the sale? Certainly they aren't "trading"...

Does anyone have any idea how the US GDP and Dow correlate over a long period of time - like since 1980? Has the Dow outrun GDP to a large extent, implying that maybe the Dow is inflated? I'm no economist, but just emperically I think it might be.

Presumably bonds, or at least that's the conventional wisdom.

Who are some of the largest investors in the market... Insurance companies. What is relatively liquid asset? Stocks. Who has to pay for things like Ivan? Insurance companies. Where do they get money to pay losses? Either from borrowing money (not very easy right now) at rates lower than their return from investments or they have to sell liquid assets...

Who is the largest insurer? AIG Who is the largest Insurance underwriter? AIG. Who will have to pay out more than anybody? AIG. Who's in the tank. AIG. Who is the the largest investor and underwriter of the market? AIG. Who has an 85 billion dollar loan guarantee? AIG. Who STILL has to sell off assets because that isn't enough? AIG.

Pretty simple math.

As the money pulls out of the market in moves into T-bills and bonds it stays out of the banks which further constricts the banks lending policies.

So much for that 700B band-aid. Wait until the fall earnings start to come in and the market will really tank hard.

At least the banks will take the 700,000,000 and loan it back to us at interest thus paying back the "loan" that we're paying them with our own money...

Naw, they'll use that money to buy up the worthless paper and invest the profits in T-Bills like everyone else.

Just because it was pushed out by Brittney Spears on the news, this isnt news. Its reality and we all knew it was coming. Why does everyone have the memory of a goldfish?
