Hangtown '73? Tripes, Bill Grossi.

Great image from Lee Sutton - wish I had known him back then!

If Tripes is #16 on a Husky 250 Mag, then that would be the 1974 race, which seemed like truly epic track conditions to someone seeing it in a magazine. Same for the Carlsbad GP that year. IMO no amount of ripping, tilling, watering, importing dirt, etc. can compare to genuine native topsoil, some advance rain, and an overcast day--at least that's what Hangtown looked like in pictures that year. Thanks for posting the photo.

Why yes, it was!

Miss that track more than any other. The location is still vacant, sorry they effort to get it going for a few vintage races a couple years ago tanked.

They had this ramp of a jump there, but it was now a drop away because they ran the track backwards that day. Sugar Bear got the holeshot and when he got to that drop away,...holy s**t. When he got to the edge he cut the power and you could hear people gasp. As soon as the rear wheel hit the ground he was WFO! I'd never seen anyone grab air like that. That's moto sex!

I also remember when Hannah passed Marty Smith in that pic FreshTopEnd posted. Hannah was a R&D rider for Suzuki last I heard. So when he showed up at Hangtown on a Yamaha with pro novice plates I didn't even notice. I noticed after the gate dropped. He was beating Marty Smith! How can that be? My buddy Monty was jumping around like a little kid screaming "Hannah, Hannah".

I am new here but my dad has a ton of old pics I will try to post up. He raced Montessa for Alpha Cycles? Does that sound right?

LittleDragon. Doesn't ring a bell with me. But the start gate was full back then. Usually knew the guys you duked it out with. I bet Tony Tamagni would know. He rode a montesticle (what Jan called them) and those guys stuck together.
