You know, even though the Knievel Snake River Canyon stunt failed, it took serious cajones to get into that homebuilt 'Skycycle' and get shot into the air like a July 4th bottle rocket. 56 degree take off ? That was some serious one-off shit right there. Love 'em or hate 'em, the man was fearless and the ultimate promoter.

In 1974 I was 6 years old... I can remember a lot of that day perfectly. I was out riding my bike around the block with my friends and you would have thought aliens landed in Washington... People were running around yelling about this starting. Half the block was crowded in the house with the huge color console with the small tube... I can remember that it took forever! And then shit hit the fan... It was the first time I learned about the evil Russians... For those of you not around at the time there were rumors about some Russian sabotage on Evel's rocket...

Classic stuff. Crazy to look back and remember so much. I miss the days of having a neighborhood where every house was open and you were known; even if they didn't have kids you could still walk in and knew what kind of cookies were in the jar and you only took one...

He (Evel) didn't want to go through with it. Hell, the executive producer had hired guns to make sure he didn't try to back out. He must have known he was going to his death when he strapped himself into that thing. Whether he pulled the chute prematurely, or not, is irrelevant to me. That took some balls.

Just think how badly this could have turned out if he wouldn't have had the all American V-Twin bike to use...he could've been killed on a CRF450...

I'm glad to hear that he is a nice guy but you may want to be a nice guy back and beg him not to do it. If that video is any indication of his skills, it is a suicide mission.

he's 62.

he ain't jumpin shit.

evel is the OG. to this day the concept of that snake river attempt is just complete insanity to me. Talk about balls to strap yourself into some prototype and get shot almost half a mile over a gorge.

He's made a career out of blowing smoke up peoples asses, over promising, and under delivering. I'm sure history will repeat itself here.

Screw all the haters! I dont know that Big Ed dude, but anyone who digs bikes and still throws a leg over a scoot at 62 is okay with me. I aint gonna judge, I suck at dirt-sickles myself but I love 'em and do my best.

That does sound like an awesome time period to live in. I have often wished I could trade in when I was born and go live back in time.

If you are still wondering as to how this all turned out, watch the movie “Stuntman” on Disney+

And those who think Evel pulled the chute early intentionally... this what can happen

Mike Hughes 2018 steam rocket launch (succeeds)
https://youtu.be/XQRHVZ56utw

Mike Hughes 2020 steam rocket launch (chute deploys early, similarly to Evel's Snake River launch)
