He was a pretty good rider back in the 70's on a Suzuki I believe. He would win a few stacked local races and do ok in the nationals too. He went up to Kannada and won enough up there to capture the Kanadian National MX title. I think he may have been yanked of that title because he wasn't a resident...could be wrong on that though. My question is if Alessi happens to win the series is he eligible to become national MX champ of Kanada?

Does anyone remember who his Mechanic was? He's famous in the bike industry along with Jim's brother Paul.

Moto-x-Fox photo of him and Steve Wise with a Catholic priest next to their bikes. I believe it was him.

Keith Bontrager.

Believe he was on a Fox Honda for Canada, but that may have been his GP races.

Saw him have a nasty crash at a Sears local race on the Fox Suzuki. You'd think you'd need a hammer to pulverize the ally tank as badly as that bike was dinged.

Bontrager and I were in our first race together at Laguna Seca mx track, both in the 100cc class. Jim Turner was from La Selva, (outside Santa Cruz) and not only had a mechanic that is very well known in the bike industry, his brother Paul developed the first RockShox, now living in Maui, Jim's nickname was "Chronic" still appropriate I am sure.

I think after Turner won, they changed the rule where no forigner could win. In later years, I believe Jeff Surwall had a Canadian grandmother or something? Allowed him to race the series for many years. After the CMRC became the dominant series, Americans were allowed, and still are to this day. Dubach, Hamblin... and others started racing the series ion the early 2000's.

Facts and dates may be incorrect, but that is the jist from where I sit.

Keith has posted here a couple times, I believe, though it may have been in the Old School forum.

Awesome era for NorCal MX.

Here's the other pic referred to above with Chuck Tannelund, Pat Richter's ,mechanic.

Jim first came to Canada to race the Nationals on a KTM 400 and a Ossa 250 by importer for both brands George Kirkpatrick. He brought Simons forks and Fox shocks to trick out both bikes. I rode the both bikes the following year in the Quebec series. Thanks to my father George K. He flew back to Cali every week to attend University and took a box of Canadian beer each trip and had a party with his buds at seasons end. I saw him again a few years later at Unidilla GP riding a fox Suzuki. Mike Kirkpatrick
