I see the thread about Austin Mincey turning into a discussion about track conditions last weekend. I did not want to see that happen, so I started a new thread. Please leave this young man's well wishes a positive thread.

Now that the track has been raced on and seen by many, for those who were there, what is the overall opinion of the place? Will it make for a good National this year? How is spectating?

Spectating will be excellent, I think they will need to rip it up deeper for the pros, yes it was rough for us regular guys but for the pros it will be a highway. Plus when they add in the 2 sections that they werent running for the amateur day it will be pretty bad ass. The dirt was great, alot of lines to choose from. I personally liked. My results sucked but caused my own luck and crashed hard.

This really sucks for this young mans friends & family and for our sport in general. Not that I matters now but does anyone know what happened? I think if there's going to be a thread specifically about the race track then I think we need to know if it was due to track conditions, human error or some freak accident like getting jumped on or something of that nature.

He came over the finish line jump and looked like he hit a kicker and basically landed on his head/ neck. it looked like the bike may have hit him also. It was bad. Real bad. I also thought maybe he lost the front end coming over it since there were braking bumps going up the face of the hill.

Most people I talked to said the same thing, the track did not flow well. People on left of us thought it was OK, people on other side hated it. Didn't hear one person say they liked it. Friday's practice was sketchy. Lots of holes in the track which you can't fix by grading over them. Saturday was better but still a little dangerous with all the kickers. I heard panic revs all day. Sunday was better but that still doesn't make it flow better. It was what it was and that was a track that had never been ridden. They seem to think that was a "cool" thing to say you rode on it first but I find that a little backwards.

And for what it's worth my son said it scared him a bit. He's never said that about an entire track. Maybe about sections of a track but not the whole track.

The track was horrible. Every single rider that i knew there hated it. Dirt was hard as a rock when dry and when it was watered it was unridable grease. Im sure they will do something different for the national but that was bad. Kickers in every songle face of every jump becasue they tilled the faces up the first day. I know its a regional and what not but it was rough.

We had friends there who said on Friday it was pretty scary with the rocks and roots and kickers. I have not spoken with anyone since Friday so I will just have to read the general consensus on here.

I was watching live timing and saw several riders I know who are normally pretty consistant had some bad motos. It looked like the place was pretty stacked with talent too!

FYI: DC said they left the track alone Friday to break it in and kept it groomed up the rest of the weekend.

The track wasn't ready for a big race. Lots of tree roots and it was ridiculously rough. Jump faces had weird ruts with kickers. My opinion is the track was too busy and no where to catch a breath. Start seemed to be pretty one sided. I wouldn't go back unless they made huge changes.

I really hope Austin pulls through. I know of 2 broken legs and a few broken arms.

I was plagued with bad starts and roost was insane. My whole chest and stomach looked like this.

This sucks all the way around because we need more people and more tracks to step up in our sport. Hopefully they'll make the necessary changes to make it safe yet challenging for everyone.

wow! that looks painful!

Guess I am kinda glad we missed this first one!

I am sure they will at least have an idea of what they need to do to improve from here.

just curious, was this the first event ever at the new track? I know its on the national schedule and hosted this regional but were there any "local" events run before this to shake out the bugs? Seems like a bold and maybe not so bright move to host such a big event for the first ever race on the track. I would imagine every gate was full being it was a regional?

I agree the faces were real weird and had strange kickers on them. Also what was up with them watering the starting gates? They did that before our 35+ motos. Turned them into slimy greasy areas.

First ever. They kept talking about how you could say you were the first. Not too smart in my opinion. There is just no way to know what dirt will do.

When is the national being held? They might want to make those changes and have some open practices before the big boys get there.

In my experience you have to have a crew that not only knows how to operate the equipment BUT knows how to build jumps as well. Just because someone can operate a dozer doesn't mean they're qualified to build a track. Sounds like someone lacked the track building experience part.

Largest regional in history of 849 riders/entry's. Besides the odd flow the track will work in , I would think. Track overall wasn't ready for a large race.

Didnt Mark build that track?

Could it be the people that do the prepping just dont have it down?

I do think it will be a lot different for the national.

Could be and I was only basing my thought off of ehr400's comments that the faces of the jumps were weird.

I understand it's not easy running a track let alone creating a brand new one! It sounds like they have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time and I wish them the best of luck.

The track was built over several months by Marc Peters. It was prepped and maintained over the weekend by the Victory Motorsports crew (Sam Gammon's team) and Jeff Russell of Racer Productions. The facility has hosted GNCC races for nearly twenty years. They had all of the equipment and all of the support they needed. These are the same folks who also build Loretta Lynn's from scratch every year, plus Muddy Creek and High Point and Sunday Creek.

I was there working on the track -- markers and pennants and corner barriers and just watching it develop for two days. There were places where it was soft and getting rough, but the finish-line jump was not one of them. Guys like Plessinger and Harrison were hitting fast and scrubbing it, which was pretty aggressive given that it wasn't much of anything but a roller. They did not run the steep-hill section to keep the lap times down to just a little over two minutes.

Regionals in general are very competitive, and this one was no different. The track was rough and choppy but there wasn't one jump that I saw that was sketchy, other than the uphill triple that only a few guys were able to even try. The soil was good, but some rocks and roots did come up, and some of the corners had a whole bunch of berms across them, and there were lots of braking bumps. They worked the jumps faces every chance they got.

I was not there when Austin crashed and don't know what happened in this tragic situation. I do know that I was stunned and we are all devastated by what happened and can only hope and pray for the best for him and his family.

As for the announcers saying it was cool to be the first people on the new track, he was a local announcer helping out and probably does think it's a big deal that Indiana had a new track. A lot of people I spoke to thought as much as well.

we had a lot of friends there and were supposed to be ourselves but it didn't work out for us. the most commonly word used by them was "sketchy". the guys that ride this type of dirt had better finishes and didn't complain as much, go figure. I'm kind of surprised erh400 said it was ok, our MI friends dislikled it most, they're spoiled from riding Red Bud and every bodies kick ass practice tracks up there lol oh and evreyone complained that the roost hurt like hell. someone on here earlier in the year was saying they were hauling in tons of mulch, guess that didn't happen.

My brother make it to Loretta's last year in Open B and College Boy and was at the regional this last weekend. After talking with him he said almost verbatim what was said above. 'Sketchy Jumps' was the main point. He's a great rider but flat landed a jump this weekend and re-injured a wrist he's had plated in the past. He hits 140 footers here at Baja MX like it's no biggie so when he was telling me about the jumps and how he felt about the track I knew it must be less than ideal.

Here's to hoping that the track will wear in and can be a mid-west staple for many more years!!

Sketchy sums it up- I thought Muddy Creek was bad, IronMan was worse. The track workers spent all of their time on the straights and left the kickers on every jump face. I guess I can be thankful that we don't have to ride them often. The number of riders that skipped their last motos pretty much tells you how the majority of the riders felt about it.

track layout looked pretty decent. I think this track suffers from geography. indiana dirt has always been crap to me, but i ride a lot of good dirt up here so i'm spoiled. This tracks dirt reminded me of byron or COCR regionals of back in the day. very tough for us d-14 folks who have good sand and good black dirt tracks and of course red buds weird stuff that is probably the best dirt in history of motocross.

I thought the dirt was fine, needed to be ripped deeper. They were only ripping it 4-6". Also ripping half way up jump faces dont help matters either. Track wouldnt hold moisture even with all the shade which was surprising. But our neighbor said they havent had any good rain since easter in the area so it makes sense. I think it was too jumpy in a few areas that hurt the flow, i think getting rid of a few of those small jumps would have let good lines develop.

My main bitch was WTF were they watering the starting gate for? I have never seen that ever in my years of racing, actually everyone I talked was scratching their heads on it. Turned them into slimy greasy trenches for no reason.

Well there's your answer right there.......Sam Gammon. Why does it not surprise me, been to too many races where this guy cares nothing about the racers and only about his pockets.

I have vacation scheduled for the national in August Davey, please let me know now if victory sports and Sam "your kids safety is not my concern" Gammon is doing track maintenance.

If so, my trip to this national has been CANCELLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MotoX85, I don't think now is the time or place to continue your assault on Sam Gammon's character. He had nothing to do with this unfortunate crash, other than he was there working on the track and the event with the rest of us. He will be at the national in August, as well as Loretta Lynn's and any other race we are fortunate enough to have his help with. If that changes your plans, so be it.
