The hot setup...

According to Super Hunky (Rick Sieman) , Ake never won another big race after signing with Yamaha. Guess the Maico magic was gone.

And, it was definitely a radial and not a square barrel Maico.
DeCoster won the overall by 4 points.

True-true...Crazy thing about that race is after that plug backed out in the first moto, he still managed a 10th place finish, and then came back to win the second moto. Roger D. went 1-2 for the day...It was Ake's championship to lose, and yeah, I guess that's exactly what happened...Damn Maicos!Wink Love them damn things -- and I can't get enough of themCool

Damn, Ake was cool! Torsten Hallman flip-down visor, Carrera goggles, Jofa mouthguard, Hallman GP leathers, Hallman chest protector, Hallman GP gloves & (I think) Hallman boots. Swedish moto-hip back in the day. Ake Johnsson was a badass.

Didn't he win a USGP @ Carlsbad one year on his Maico?

Sweet pictures Lenny, Howard (BigMaico) has been kind enough to let me ride some of his superb bikes at Rio.

I only rode the first one (#69) and it is sweet. Definitely takes some getting used to drum brakes, no powervalve and such coming off a modern bike, but after a few laps you see why Magoo was a such a badass on these things. They WILL go fast if you are man enough to go for it. Dont wanna totally hijack your thread - the Yamaha in your first picture, is that a '75 250 ?

I'm not sure, remember those work's bike back then looked nothing like the showroom bikes, but I think '75 was the first year of the monoshock...

DeCoster & some others wore those boots early on...and it looks like a Hallman badge on them, but just guessing. They are definately not Alpinestars though. I thought I was the shit in my blue/yellow Hallman GP leathers back then (did NOT have my name on the side)...but always wanted a pair of the black ones with the red/yellow stripe and the "ABH" logo on them like DeCoster wore. I never could find a pair. Must have been custom. That whole Euro "look" was the coolest thing ever to me.

I had a pair of DeCoster signature pants that were made of nylon and leather that were pretty nice back then around the late '70's blue/yellow Suzuki...Anything Hallman back then were the "Tits"...

Gotcha. Those buckles just are more old school than the Hallmans I had:

I had Malcolm Smith 'Gold Medal' leathers in those days, colors to match my Electro (yellow/red). My Gold Belt just blended right in with the leathers. To this day I have never seen a pair of those leathers like I had long ago.

Love this thread. Smile

Those boots, along with the Hi-Point boots that were so popular were all made by Alpinestar for the various companies that marketed them. Those Hallman boots had the same metal "rock plate" that the Hi-Points did, but it was covered by a leather piece.

Yeah, I think Barry Higgins owns that bike. Would love to ride that bike -- just one time. I catch a lot of crap for racing Maicos in the AHRMA scene, but nothing, no one, will ever dissuade me from owing, riding, and racing them. Been hooked on them since I was 11 years old..
