Tick Tick Tick

It seemed for most that a few beers with a friend in the garage was enough to get the old two stroke top end replaced, but with the added difficulty in both time and parts are four strokes as reliable as used bike purchases?

When I ask some people how many hours are on your 250f/450f I hear a barrage of excuses to justify the fact it is long overdue:

1. Well I really do not run it on the rev limiter much. I shift in the middle RPM's
2. I change the oil all the time.
3. I only ride once a month so it is ok to go a few years on a top end
4. My buddy has a 250f that he has ran for 2 years with no problem so I am not worried
5. It takes too expensive to do a top end plus no time. So I will just sell it soon to some local kid
6. I do not ride in dust

The list continues, so I wonder if these ill maintained machines will gernade on unsuspecting consumers?

IMHO buying a used four stroke or two stroke dirt bike is a gamble....a more expensive gamble. Buying a used bike with "new top end" doesn't mean to much....did the guy who did the work know what the heck they were doing, did they use a torque wrench when they put everything back together...who knows?

In my experience buying a used 4-stroke is a big mistake!! unless yo know the person you are buying from first hand and know the back ground of the bike. I purchased an 07 KX 450 F from an "honest" racer that said it had maybe 20 hrs on it. After nearly 700 and all new valves and top end it runs fine. Or atleast so i hear from the guy who bought it from me, after putting all that money into it I sold it and purchased a Brank New left over CRF 450!! Live and Learn Smile ....I did.

7. There's too much shit to remove to do a top end, and I'd rather play video games and look at porn all night.

Instead of a few beers you now need a 12 pack each. No worries!

At least most guys that race know what an air filter is and that it needs to be changed.

yeah i would almost say it might be better to buy a nice used race bike rather than billy bobs crf250 still on its first air filter and second oil change. it might sound surprising but alot of people who dont race dont know they need to change the air filter every ride or change the oil more than once a year. there are some red neck kids around me and oh boy i cringe when i hear what they do

Used can be a great deal.... But knowing the bike is a good idea. They are just a piece of equipment that has a service life and having a little bit of background on it can help decide if the bike is worth buying.

I sold a bike to a buddy and it ran good for him all year, he raced it every weekend .. He loved that bike.... but he did nothing to it and it blew up the next year...go figure.

Here's an old trick for anyone buying a used piece of metal... ask the seller if you can have a local mechanic scope the bike... that will save you a little heart burn... honest sellers always say no prob... the other guy... well do the math...loi ;-)

I know more two strokes that have gone grenade and sound like roached piles of crap then any four stroke. But hey we are only ten years into them. I still see 426's as trail bikes pluggin away on the same top end.

"Never raced" - to me means; never maintained, had an oil change or filter change. I worry more about that bike then what type of motor it has. The neighbor kids seem to have purchased them all. I can hear them for MILES as they ride away. What's muffler packing anyway? Added weight?

i never understood what it mattered if it was "never raced". unless its a national riden bike, whats it matter. at a race you get what, 4 laps in practice, 4 laps per moto? so you got 12 laps on it a race? to where as someone like me, who doesnt race very much, but goes to a track to practice 3 times a week and runs motos... youd be off alot worse. or is that classified as raced?

so what im saying is, id rather buy the raced bike.
